Thirty four college teams drove the 1,100-mile, seven-day race in June. The University's team is using the $60,000 cash prize to prepare for November's World Solar challenge in Australia. WELCOME Continued from page 1 left off," said Alan Levy, director of public affairs and information for the Housing Division. "The idea is that the entire University should be welcoming students, notjust the housing division." Moriarty began organizing the wel- come week in late April, modeling its design after successful welcome pro- grams at colleges such as the University of California at Berkeley-. "Many campuses across the country do welcome weeks for new students. We personalized it for Michigan so that it would meet the needs of the Univer- sity," Moriarty said. "Berkeley is com- parable because of its size and how (its welcome week) was organized and pre- sented." 'Welcome to Michigan '93" began last Thursday with events including tours of the Matthaei Botanical Garde-s and Conservatory, and bus and walking -mrs for parents. Throughout the week, stu- dents could attend programs sponsored by the various academic schools and colleges. Events concluded yesterday with a job fair, open houses and semi- nars on various campus organizations. The highlight of the week's events was Tuesday's New Student Convoca- tion at Hill Auditorium. Students were greeted by University President James Duderstadt, Vice President for Student Affairs Maureen Hartford and student leaders who talked to students about how they can achieve success at the University. MSA President Craig Greenberg, one of the speakers, said he felt the event went well. He stressed the impor- tance of getting involved in student organizations. "The event made a good impression on people, motivating them to do more in college than just study or socialize," Greenberg said. University Activities Center Presi- dent Chris Curtis said he felt events such as Escapade '93 made the Univer- sity friendlier. "It welcomes students to the University and gives them an over- view of what we can do," he said. Moriarty said evaluations are being sent to sponsors and new students to rate the overall success of the program. No decision has been made yet whether or not the University will continue the program next year, but she hopes to know within the next two months. 0 9 CAMAG Continued from page 1 begin for several months in order to allow both programs to adjust to the "Part of the reason that I will not be starting until JIuly is so there will be a smooth transition - both in the Ath- letic Department and with the Cam- paign," he said. Roberson added that he will not be levn an loos ends at Campaign headquarters. "I will be doing mostly Campaign work for the next few months." Roberson said he does not know who will take over the directorship of Campaign when he moves on to sportier '' so mone had told me I COUld Choose ayjob at the University to wind down my career I'd pick right where I'm gong' -Joe Robe rson appointed A thletic Director things. "I really can't say who will be taking over the Campaign for Michigan when I leave. (Duder-stadt) will be making that decision, since that person will be reporting directly to the president." Duderstadt said that search is still in the planning stages. 'We will be deciding on a process in the next several weeks, but I suspect it will be a national search," he said. Roberson added that if he must as- sume his new position before a re place- ment is found, Roy Muir, the University's associate vice president for development, will take over in the in- terim. The Campaign is divided into two sections - gifts and pledges, and trusts and bequests. After just one year, in gifts and pledges the Campaign has raised more than $420 million. In trusts and be- quests, the Campaign has raised $77 million of its $150 million goal. In total, the Campaign has raised $498 million toward its $1 billion goal. Roberson said the Campaign for Michigan is running ahead of schedule adding that the donations keep coming. 'We're negotiating several signifi- cant gifts right now," he said. "Those should mature in the next couple of months and that should provide us with a portion of the money we stili need." Roberson said he is looking forward to his new position. "I've been around here for a long time, and I'm getting to be an old man," he said. "If someone had told me l could choose any job at the University to wind down my career I'd pick right where I'm going." Duderstadt agreed that Roberson is uniquely suited to the Athletic Director position. "My objective was to get a true educator at the helm of Michigan athlet- ics, since I have been concerned that thei intense public pressure has pulled vol- lege sports farther and farther away from universities," he said. "Joe is not only aprovenadministra- tor, a former professional athlete and a strong leader, but he also has adoctorate in education along with extensive expe- rience as Dean of Students and chancel- lor of our UM-Flint campus," he said.
