0- The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 8, 1993 MICHIGAN SPORTS ROUNDUP Women's soccer sets record with 12th straight By DARREN EVERSON FOR THE DAILY The Michigan women's soccer team continued its winning ways with a 9-0 victory over Eastern Michigan lastnight at Mitchell Field. The victory over the Eagles extended the team's record winning streak to 12 games and raised its record to 14-1 on the season. Senior forwards Alicia Stewart and Lisa Ashton each scored twice for Michigan, which led Eastern 6-0 at halftime. According to senior captain Carrie Taylor,' the Wolverines' ball move- ment was the secret to their success. "The key tonight was our con- trolled passing," Taylor said. "We movedoffeachotherreally well. Over- all, we were pretty pleased with our performance." Men's Tennis With Big Tenplay slated tobegin in January, the Michigan men's tennis team continues to tune up, hoping to make a serious run at the conference championship. For the next two weekends, some of the Wolverines will be traveling to Austin, Texas to compete in the Volvo Invitational Tennis Tournament. The format of the tournament re- quires that some of the players invited must qualifybefore they can play in the main draw of the tournament. The quali- fying stage takes place this weekend, with the main draw set to begin the following Friday. Representing the team in Austin are Dan Brakus, Grady Burnett, Brad Kramer and Ann Arbor-native Peter Pusztai. Pusztai, Burnett and Kramer are making the trip this Saturday, while Brakus will skip the qualifying round and start play in the main draw next weekend. "By playing at the Volvo, they'll be playing against the best players in the country," sophomore Geoff Prentice said. -Darren Everson Cross Country MEN'S After winning the Lehigh Invitational and finishing third at the Mountain West Classic, the Michigan men's cross country team will sport a different look when it hits the course today. The squad's top six runners will not make the trip to Big Rapids for the Michigan Intercollegiates on the cam- pus of Ferris State. Coach Ron Warhurst said he sees this weekend as an opportunity to let other runners compete. Of the ten run- ners Warhurst will take to Big Rapids, only three have seen action this season: redshirt freshman Andrew Hayes, sophomore Kristopher Eggle and jun- ior Jay Schemanske. Schemanske is questionable, how- ever, because of a groin injury. "Wesee this as an opportunity tolet them (the non-starters) race and let other guys (the starters) stay home and have a hard workout," Warhurst said. -Barry Sollenberger WOMEN'S After having a week- end off to recuperate from a stellar effort in the Mountain West Classic, the Michigan women's cross country team is ready to take its No. 3 ranking to this weekend's Michigan Intercollegiates meet hosted by Ferris. State. While being the top-ranked team competing, Michigan coach Mike McGuire said he doesn't see it as a day Off. "We're very heavily favored in this meet, but we're not taking it lightly," McGuire said. "We're approaching this meet with the idea of getting a good, hard effort in because the course we will be running at Ferris is kind of similar to the course we will be seeing atMichigan State for theBig Ten meet." - Tim Stith Put Yourself In The Picture For Next Summer!
