"What do you want to do when you grow up, Johnny/Julie?"
"I want to eradicate syphilis, mommy!"
28 years ago, the United states public Health Service was looking for graduating seniors in all fields to stop the
;spread of syphilis. Now, we're not saying that this wasn't a worthwhile cause - sexuall y transmitted diseases are
-serious matters, today more than ever - but let's just examine the theory behind this particular ad.
It promises "immediate job involvement, interesting work, an outlet for creative ideas and excellent opportunity
for advancement:" So when your creative juices have stopped flowing in the syphilis department, are you demoted
to the herpes simplex-B department? Or when you've proved yourself to be the king of the syphilis movement, do
you get promoted to gonorrhea?
And if you've majored in any of these 15 lucrative fields, you are eligible. What we want to know is how a
dphilosophy degree can be useful when it comes to syphilis. Is. there a Zen theory on syphilis?
One major they did not list was Theater and Drama, an egregious omission in our opinion. If you know your
,modern drama, you need only look to Henrik Ibsen to read about syphilis. (Of course in Ibsen no one caught syphilis
by sleeping around; they caught it from their fathers, who slept around, usually with the servants.)
And the U.S. Public Health Service was only interested in eradicating syphilis in the United States. If we can give
troops and weapons to countries all over the globe, surely we can give them a little sex education. Ibsen's Scandinavia
sure could have used some help.
While this is a noble career ambition, could you imagine bringing one of these people home to meet your parents?
Dad: What was it you did for a living again? Something with the government?
Significant Other: Yes. I work in the Venereal Disease Branch of the Communicable Disease Center for the U.S.
Public Health Service. It's my personal mission to eradicate syphilis in this country.
BEEP! Thanks for playing. We hope we haven't crushed anyone's career ambitions with this little ditty. If your
whole college career is fueled by the dream that one day we will live in a syphilis-free society, then go for it.
