The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, October 4,1993-7 .Bucs' offense emerges in 27-10 victory over Lions ASSOCIATED PRESS Michael Husted opened the door and the rest of the Tampa Bucca- neers' offense followed yesterday. Husted kicked a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and the NFL's lowest scoring team collected three third-quarter touch- *downs en route to a 27-10 victory over the Detroit Lions. Craig Erickson completed 14 of 25 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, while Reggie Cobb rushed forone TD and 113 yards- seven more than the entire Tampa Bay team had gained on the ground in its first three games. The Bucs (1-3) began the day 9ranked 28th in total offense after scoring only 27 points in lopsided losses to the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Chicago Bears. Detroit (3-2) entered as the NFC Central Division leader but unsure of where it actually stood because the Lions had struggled to score and had beaten three teams with a com- *bined record of 1-11. Lions coach Wayne Fontes was hoping Andre Ware was the answer at quarterback. However, Detroit struggled again after moving 80 yards in five plays on its first possession to take a 7-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run by Barry Sanders. Sanders, the NFL's leading rusher, ran for 50 yards on the drive and finished with 130 yards on 22 attempts. Ware, however, missed open re- ceivers and repeatedly threw into coverage before finally throwing an interception that set up Cobb's 3- yard TDrun fora 17-10 Tampa Bay lead. Erik Kramer replaced Ware with five minutes left in the third quarter and wasn't any more effective. He overthrew Herman Moore on his first series and Tampa Bay's Joe King intercepted to setanotherBucs TD. Erickson, in his third NFL start, threw scoring passes of 15 yards to Courtney Hawkins and 37 yards to Ron Hall, the latter after King's interception and 1-yard return to the Detroit 40. Tampa Bay's defense, ranked 26th before Sunday, held the Lions to a field goal after the game-open- ing drive and forced three turnovers. Jason Hanson's 30-yard field goal was set up by a questionable official's call that allowed Tim McKyer's fumble recovery and 23- yard return to stand. A penalty flag was thrown on the play because the Lions appeared to have too many men on the field. The officials picked up the flag, though, after determining that no official had time to count the num- ber of players on the field before Tampa Bay's quick snap. Ware completed 5-of-14 passes for 56 yards. Kramer was 11-of-24 for 120 yards. Philadelphia 35, N.Y. Jets 30 Randall Cunningham broke his left leg in the Philadelphia Eagles' 35-30 comeback victory over the New York Jets yesterday. He will be sidelined eight to 10 weeks and may need surgery. Cunningham missed virtually all of the 1991 sea- son with torn knee ligaments. Eagles backup Bubby Brister ral- lied Philadelphia from a two-touch- down deficit. Eric Allen raced 94 yards with an interception for the winning touchdown. When he got to the end zone, he slapped hands with Cunningham, who was oa crutches in the runway leading to the dressing room. Cunningham was injured in the second quarter when he appeared to take a mis-step and then was hit by Marvin Washington and Scott Mersereau. Dallas 36, Green Bay 14 The Dallas Cowboys, who held an audition for kickers two weeks ago, apparently picked the rightguy. Eddie Murray made five field goals to lead the Cowboys to a 36- 14 victory over the Green Bay Pack- ers on Sunday, overshadowing Emmitt Smith's first full game since he ended his celebrated holdout. Smith gained an ordinary 71 yards on 13 carries with one TD for Dallas. Murray was anything but ordinary. He nailed two 19-yard field goals, a 33-yarder and a pair of long-distance shots that went 48 and 50 yards. The 5-for-5 perfor- mance tied a club record. Murray joined the Super Bowl champions after they released Lin Elliott following an 0-2 start. They held a dog and pony show at their practice camp for a new kicker, and Murray, 37 years old and a 14-year veteran, won the job. The move paid off big time against the Packers as the Cowboys evened their record at 2-2. "It's important for me to have a game like that for a new team," Murray said. "I was in one of those good grooves. It's important I contribute because of the goals this team has." Chicago 6, Atlanta 0 Butler kicked field goals of 52 and 48 yards as the Bears sent the Flacons to their first shutout in five years. It was the Sixth time this season a team has won without ben- efit of a touchdown. With Billy Joe Tolliver replac- ing injured Bobby Hebert at quar- terback, Atlanta drove to Chicago's 8-yard line in the final minute but lost the ballon downs with 1:25 left. Kansas City 24, L.A. Raiders 9 The Kansas City Chiefs lost Joe Montana to an injured, but still beat theRaiders yesterday. Montana was knocked out of a game for the sec- ond time this season. Aaron Wallace was penalized 15 yards for a late in the second quarter hit but Montana did not blame the injury on him. "They say it happened when he grabbed me but I don't remember," he said. "All I know is right before I got to the sideline, just as I was going out of bounds, I felt it go. It was a little pop." Montana hit 7 of 9 for 68 yards andtwoTDs before the injury. Dave Krieg took over and steered the Chiefs to the triumph. Denver 35, Indianapolis 13 Denver ended Indianapolis' four-game road winning streak - longes tin the NFL-asJohnElway threw two TD passes. The Broncos have won 19 of their last 21 games in Mile High Stadium and are 96-30 at home since 1977. New Orleans 37, L.A. Rams 6 New Orleans pushed its record to 5-0 as Wade Wilson threw two touchdown passes in a rout of the Los Angeles Rams. Morten Andersen kicked three field goals for the victorious Saints. San Francisco 38, Minnesota 19 San Francisco's offense stuttered against Minnesota but defense and special teams bailed out the 49ers against Minnesota. Dexter Carter returned a punt 72 yards for one touchdown and Eric Davis returned aninterception 41 yards for another. However, the Eagles battled back from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat the New York Jets, 35-30. Bubby Brister will replace Cunningham for the eight to 10 weeks the Eagles quarterback will miss.
