When people think of a substance
abuse rehabilitation center they
usually imagine a hospital-like
institution. However, at Dawn's
Farm in Ypsilanti it is quite a
different situation. The farm is a
non-profit residential treatment
center in which individuals
participate in a recovery program
that includes daily group therapy
sessions and AA meetings as well as
a strict schedule of farm labor.
During our visit we observed the
residents as they tended to pigs,
sheep and goats, and retrieved eggs
from the chickens. They also care
for the garden in which they grow
pumpkins, squash and brussel
sprouts. Daily meals are prepared by
the residents using the fruits of their
labor.
