10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 24, 1993 Latin films are a mce break from Van Damme flicks I I By MICHAEL THOMPSON So you're tired of Van Damme and Willis. You want something new and exciting. Well youjust happen to be in luck. The Film and Video Program is sponsoring the New Films from Latin America festival. Wait, don't even think about screaming any preconceived ideas. Listen. The first film of this weekend is "Tango Feroz." Set in Buenos Aires at the end of the '60s, the film shows the rise and fall of Tango, a controversial rock singer. He is on the brink of success and when he meets his true love, it looks like he will have immortality. Everything looks good for him. Tango, however, is a man who has to say no to almost every kind of authority. He will not back down to anyone. This is his most redeeming characteristic and ultimately his most tragic flaw. The film is not a simple good versus evil tale. The director has too much respect for his audience and central character to tell a nice, quaint fairy tale. The film, much like Tango, never compromises; there are no easy an- swers. The images are harsh and real. On Sunday two documentaries kick off the evening. The first is "Crocnicas Cinecologicas" (Gynecological Chronicles). Based on material by Elisa Lerner the film tells three stories of Venezuelan women during the '30s and '40s. The other documentary, "No Se Porque Te Quiero Tanto" (I Can't Stop Loving You) explores the lives of two women. The film searches for a reason why these two women remained in abusive relationships. The final film of this weekend's installment is a true gem. "Confession A Laura" (Confession To Laura) is a wonderful film about finding the truth in an impossible situation.-The film deals with only three characters, but the story is so pure that it doesn't matter. Don Santiago is taking a cake to his friend Laura. After he arrives, he is stuck in the apartment because of fighting in the streets. Santiago's oppressive wife is right across the street, trying to watch his every move. All three characters experience profound personal changes in one night. Their revelations aren't heavy handed or unbelievable. In fact, given their situation, the characters managed to do quite well. Director Jaime Osorio, much like director Marcelo Pineiro isn't out to insult his audience's intelligence. Although the set up for the film seems quite terrifying, the director and actors manage to find humor in them- selves and the extreme situation. The film has a definite neo-realist feel to it, but don't let that scare you away. Everyone involved is right on the money and nothing ever feels forced. So if you've seen enough action adventure garbage on TV in the last week or you just want to see something intelligent, then check out some cinema from Latin America. The festival starts with the four films this week- end and then three more next weekend. Who knows, you might finally be entertained. A native of Flint, she began singing while studying piano at the Detroit Conservatory of Music. Then her vocal abilities (untrained formally) won her a talent show at the Paradise Theater, where she was discovered by the legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. From there, she rocketed to stardom, appearing not only with Gillespie's big band, but with other greats such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Duke Jordan. All this before she was even 18 years old. Since then, Ms. Carter has moved to New York City, and has made quite a name for herself in jazz circles. She arranges much music, which keeps her in great demand. She also founded her own recording company, Bet-Car Productions, and has a host of recordings. To kick off the University Musical Society's "Choice Series," this Saturday Betty Carter will perform original selections from her latest recording, "It's Not About The Melody," plus works from the standard jazz repertoire. She plays Hill Auditorium at 8 p.m.; tickets range from $12-$24, with $6 student rush tickets available at the Union Ticket office from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday. "Fucked Up Inside" is in no way a boring rehash of the songs on last year's brilliant "Lazer Guided Melodies" with some applause and screaming thrown in. Only four of the album's seven songs are taken from the first record, and even those tracks lose their familiarity with the radical reworkings. For example, the stun- ning final track, "Smiles," receives a climactic ending that the studio ver- sion only gives a small hint of before fading out. But these climaxes are typical of nearly every song on "Fucked," with the exception of the enchanting open- ing cut, "Take Good Care Of It." This is arecord of extreme peaks anddepths of both volume and tempo, often al- ternating suddenly between lonely two-chord organ drones and explo- sive bursts of ethereal noise, in which effect-heavy guitar riffs collide off of one another as cymbals crash, punctu- ated by saxophone bursts and some other-worldly ambient sounds as well. The sound is so overpowering that even vocalist/songwriterJason Pierce seems too shy to bring his voice above a strained whisper, afraid of interfer- ing with the mesmerizing sounds that surround him. This is a feeling that the listener will probably share. This is a wonderful record from an equally wonderful group. Spiritual- ized have, once again, created a sound that enraptures as well as excites, and begs to be heard. -Andy Dolan INSTITUTE FOR STUDY ABROAD B U T L E R U N I V E R S I T Y UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN GREAT BRITAIN AUSTRALIA IRELAND NEW ZEALAND Fully integrated study at British, Irish, New Zealand and Australian universities FALL OR SPRING SEMESTER - FULL YEAR INSTEP * SUMMER PROGRAM - INTERNSHIPS Study Abroad InformationSession BulletBoys Za-Za Warner Bros.
