The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 23, 1993 - 7 Ann Arbor community unites *for interfaith prayer for Bosnia By JANET BURKITT FOR THE DAILY Ann Arbor residents of various religious denominations gathered last night at the First United Methodist Church ofAnn Arbor to pray for peace in Bosnia. The prayer service was sponsored jointly by the Ann Arbor Committee on Bosnia of the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice (ICPJ) and the Guild House Campus Ministry, an interfaith justice and peace campus ministry of the University. Rev. Jodi BushdieckerAtwood, co- minister at Guild House Campus Min- istry and member of the Ann Arbor Committeeon Bosnia, said lastnight's service was "the culmination of weekly prayer vigils held outside of the Ann Arbor Federal Building that aimed to bring Jews, Christians, and Muslims together to pray for Bosnian peace." Rev. Thom Saffold, a member of the steering committee of the ICPJ, addressed the group of about 60 resi- dents. Saffold worked in Bosnia last summer with an international group called Mir Sada, which means "Peace Now." Saffold criticized the type of peace that governments typically endorse - which he said was built on war rather than justice -and silenced the crowd when he drew parallels be- tween the current situation in Bosnia and the Holocaust. He alluded to "cre- mation in the prison camps in 1992." Saffold then encouraged the con- gregation to band together and "speak loud enough so that ... governments will hear and respond." Also included in the service were prayers led by Rabbi Robert Dobrusin of Beth-Israel Congregation in Ann Arbor, Catholic religious educator John Schwarz and Imam Mohammad Saber of the Islamic Center of Ann Arbor. Carol Phillips, an Ann Arbor resi- dent present at the service was enthu- siastic about the unity displayed. "I think it was a wonderful service. There was a sharing of differentpoints of view, an openness of ideas, and a wonderful representation of different cultures and viewpoints," she said. The chair for the Ann Arbor Com- mittee on Bosnia, Dr. Barbara Pliskow, in turn said she was encouraged by the response of the Ann Arbor commu- nity, which she called "very support- ive - both financially and morally." Pliskow said the committee has been in existence for almost a year, and new members can still join. Though itis apartof the ICPJ, Pliskow said ICPJ's official position on U.S. intervention has yet to be decided; however, she said the committee has taken a stance favoring intervention. The next event sponsored by the committee is titled "Never Again: Cultural Genocide during the Holo- caust and Bosnia." It is scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church.
