8 - The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, September 13, 1993 Lions top Pats in overtime thriller Hanson's fourfleld goals lead Detroit to victory, 19-16; lead Central 0 FOXBORO, Mass. (AP)-The last time the New England Patriots played at home, they ended a horrible season with an overtime loss to Miami. Then, Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe arrived, and the future brightened. On Sunday, they lost their home opener in overtime. This time, the Detroit Lions over- came a shaky offensive performance andwon 19-16onJasonHanson'sfourth field goal at 11:04 of the extra period. They are 2-0 for the first time since 1985. Parcells took little comfort from his team's improvement over its season- opening 38-14lossinBuffalotheprevi- ous Sunday. "There'snothing to show forit,"the Patriots coach said. "Getting closer doesn't count." "We played at least as well as the other team. It's a real heartbreak," said Bledsoe, the toppickinthisyear'sdraft. Bledsoe was the big name from Washington State. But Hanson, his former college teammate, delivered the winning play. Barry Sanders, the big star of Detroit's offense, finished with 148 yards on 32 carries after gaining just 20 in the first half. But Rodney Peete's passing was what drove the Lions to the decisive field goal. "When you step out there, you just don'thave time to think," said Hanson, asecond-rounddraftpicklastyear."You have to relax and let a kick go. It hap- pens so fast, you look up and see it sail through." Peete had thrown for just 131 yards until the final series. He was 3-for-4 for 44 yards on the winning drive. "Up until thatdrive we had been too predictable," Peete said. "It had been run, run, pass, punt. But I thought on the last drive, we mixed it up real good." Peete threw completions of 14 yards toSanders, 13 to Herman Moore and 17 to Brett Perriman on the final drive. The last pass gave Detroit a first down at the New England 28-yard line. Sanders then ran three times for 8 yards, setting up Hanson's kick. Bledsoe marched the Patriots 77 yards in 3:12 to the tying touchdown - a 2-yard pass to Vincent Brisby with 12 seconds leftin the fourth quarter. Bledsoe completed9 of l2passes for61 yardson the drive. Until Brisby's touchdown sent the game into overtime, the only touch- down came just 11 seconds into the game when Willie Clay returned Troy Brown's fumble of the opening kickoff 15 yards. It was the earliest touchdown ever against the Patriots. There are no official NFL records for the quickest touchdown. Between those two scores, Hanson had field goals of 22, 23 and 26 yards while New England rookie kicker Scott Sisson connected from 21, 26 and 32 yards. ButSisson's28-yardattemptwent wide right with 12:16 left in the fourth quarter. "I would have betmy life on it," the fifth-round draft choice said. "I wasjust probably a little bit too relaxed. It was so easy. Bledsoe nearly put the Patriots in position for his first NFL win when he hooked up with Leonard Russell for a 38-yard completion to the Detroit 34 on their second overtime series. Two plays later, Russell barged up the middle for 30 yards. Butguard Rich Baldinger, a 13-year veteran signed last week, was called for holding. After an incompletion, the Patriots punted, and Detroit began its winning drive at its own 20. "The biggest thing I told them was to stay poised," Detroit coach Wayne Fontes said. "We stayed focused and won the game." Peete completed 16of25 passes for 175 yardswhile Bledsoe was 28-for-49 for 239 yards. The Lions trailed just9-7 athalftime despite losing the ball on a fumble, an unsuccessful fourth-down quarterback sneak and an interception on their first three possessions. They held the ball for 7:38 on their fourth series but had to punt. Detroit's Kevin Scott was called for illegal use of hands when the Patriots punted on the next possession. That gave them a first down and they marched to Sisson's third field goal and a 9-7 lead 11 sec- onds before intermission. Eagles 20, Packers 17 Roger Ruzek kicked a 30-yard field goal with 5 seconds to go as the Eagles, White's old team, rallied with 13 fourth- quarterpoints to beat White's new team, the Green Bay Packers, 20-17. White was involved in eight tackles, had two sacks and forced two fumbles. "It was emotional to play against guys you worked your tail off for eight years," the $17 million free agent said. "It would have been more emotional if we'd won." Despite his big game, White could not carry the Packers past the Eagles. Visiting Philadelphia (2-0) tied it when Randall Cunningham - twice stripped of the ball by White in the first half - eluded the stardefensive end on arollout and hit Victor Bailey fora40-yard touch- down with 4:14 left. AfterGreen Bay(1-1)punted, Phila- delphia used most of the clock before Ruzek's game-winner.
