Michigan St. 31, Kansas 14 EAST LANSING (AP) - Craig Thomas rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown Saturday to lead Michigan State to a 31-14 victory over Kansas. The win was the first opening-day victory for Michigan State since 1989, when the Spartans beat Miami of Ohio. Michigan State led 14-2 at halftime, but Kansas (1-2) cut the lead to nine midway through the third quarter on a 52-yard field goal by All-American Dan Eichloff. The Spartans answered with an 80- yard drivecappedby Thomas' 12-yard touchdown run. A 35-yard field goal by Eichloff made it 21-8 after three quarters, but Bill Stoyanovich matched that with a career-best50-yarder early in the fourth. Michigan State letKansas back into the game midway through the fourth, when Mill Coleman dropped a punt on the Spartan 20. Six plays later, Charles Henley scored from one yard out. Henley was stopped on his two- point conversion attempt, though, leav- ing the score 24-14 with 8:13 to play. MSU's Damian Manson clinched the game with 3:05 left when he inter- cepted a Fred Thomas pass and went five yards for the TD. Minnesota 27, Indiana State 10 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tim, Schade threw for 345 yards, including a touchdown, and Chris Darkins rushed for another score as Minnesota downed Indiana State 27-10 on Saturday. The Sycamores (0-2) stayed in the game until the fourth quarter thanks to an array of blunders by the heavily favored Gophers (1-1). Schade, coming off a record-setting performance against Penn State last week, completed 26 of 39 passes but threw two interceptions and fumbled once to keep the game close. He finally helped the Gophers break the game open on a fourth-quarter drive highlighted by two key passes and a 3- yard scamper into the end zone by Darkins that put Minnesota up 17-3. Wisconsin 24, SMU 16 DALLAS (AP) - Darrell Bevell hit wide receiver J.C. Dawkins with a game-deciding 25-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter Saturday night and heavily favored Wisconsin rallied fora 24-16 victory over SouthernMeth- odist. Iowa 31, Iowa St. 28 AMES, Iowa (AP) - Ryan Terry and Sedrick Shaw led a relentless first- half running game and Iowa held on in the second half to beat IowaState 31-28 Saturday, the Hawkeyes' 11th straight victory over their in-state rival. Iowa State appeared to have the experience and talent to finally end its long drought against Iowa, which had been favored by only 2 1/2 points and was unimpressive in a season-opening 26-25 victory over Tulsa. But the Hawkeyes (2-0) dominated the line of scrimmage and scored five of the first six times they had the ball in building a 31-7 lead that turned out to be too much for Iowa State (1-1) to over- come. I IowaState got within three points on Calvin Branch's three-yard touchdown run and his 2-point conversion run with 1:25 left, then recovered an onside kick at its own 49. But Iowa's Maurea Crain stripped the ball from quarterback Bob Utter on the Cyclones' nextplayandMikeDailey recovered for the Hawkeyes atmidfield. Indiana 28, N. Two of the Hoosier fumbles were by quarterback John Paci. The first one cost Indiana an apparent touchdown in the first quarter and the second set up a 39-yard field goal by Brian Steger that pulled the Huskies (0-2) within 14-10 late in the third period. But a short punt by Jamie Dobay midway through the final quarter gave Indiana (2-0) the ball atthe Huskies' 32- yard line. Chaney ran 20 yards, then scored from the 2 three plays later. Indiana put the game out of reach when NorthemIllinois quarterback Scott Crabtree was sacked and fumbled. Mills, a defensive end, picked up the ball and ran 46 yards for the final touchdown with 3:42 to go. Missouri 31, Illinois 3 COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Jeff Handy passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns, and the Missouri defense, ranked last in the Big Eight last year, had a big game in a 31-3 season-open- ing victory Saturday over Illinois. Missouri hasn't had a winning sea- son since 1983, but Illinois hasn't been the reason, losing five straight at Co- lumbia. Handy has thrown for more than 200 yards in all seven of his career starts. He completed 20 of 30 passes with no interceptions, hitting MikeJadlot and Kenny Holly for scores of 11 and 15 yards. Michael Washington, a 255-pound fullback, ran for two touchdowns. Illinois redshirt freshman quarter- back Scott Weaver completed 18 of 32 passes for 169 yards but was sacked four times, intercepted twice and lost a fumble as Missouri got big plays from several players. No. 15 Penn St. 21, USC 20 STATE COLLEGE (AP) - Brian O'Neal scored twice on short runs and Penn State's defense pressured Rob Johnson into a bad pass on a last-minute 2-point conversion try to preserve the Nittany Lions'21-20 victory over South- ern Cal. Southern Cal (1-2), limited to 34 yards rushing, scored two touchdowns in the final 5:12 on Johnson's arm, but Johnson threw too low to Johnny McWilliams on the 2-point try with 37 seconds left. The same play, just moments be- fore, had pulled the Trojans within 21- 20. Penn State (2-0) used fullbacks and pulling guards nearly to perfection to take a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. The Lions had 282 yards rushing for the game. Southern Cal, with just 11 yards rushing in the first half, scored after Mike Salmon's 30-yard interception return to the Penn State 1 in the second quarter. With 5:12 left, Ken Grace wriggled free after being trapped at the Lions 25 and scored on a 30-yard pass from Johnson, narrowing the score to 21-14. Johnson avoided a sack on the first play of Southern Cal's final drive and setup the final score with a20-yardpass to Johnny Morton as he dove out of bounds at the 2. On the 2-point pass attempt, Tyoka Jackson worked around the Trojans line and Johnson threw low trying to get the ball past linebacker Brian Gelzheiser. Purdue 28, W. Michigan 13 WESTLAFAYETTE(AP)-Arlee Conners ran for two touchdowns and Jeff Hill caught a 68-yard touchdown pass as Purdue amassed 409 first-half yards Saturday in a 28-13 victory over Western Michigan.
