Page 18-The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, April 20,1993 Men's golf looks for consistency, leadership Mariners end Tigers' streak at by Elisa Sneed. Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's golf team has three more chances to prove that it has all the potential it thinks it does -the BnceFossom-Spartan Invitational, the Wolveine Invitational, and the Big Ten Championships. "We're a better team than we're playing to," Michigan coach JimCamas said. "If we can get out and play before the Spartan Invitational ... we'll get better and better." But that may be a little difficult because, once again, the Wolverines are not entirely in control of their ability to getoutandpractice.Besides the weather this time, there are also exams to con- tend with. "Finals are coming up," Cams said. 'L.egally, we can't even practice and play starting with Thursday. Our em- phasis is getting ready for exams." After all the testing is over, the Wol- verines will have some work to do, including more qualifying.Although he was not completely dissatisfied with Michigan'sperformancein theFirestone Invitational, Caras said he still did not find his first team. "We'll try to qualify next Thursday and Friday (for the Spartan Invita- tional),"Carrassaid. "Thequalifier will be for one spot" Further down the road for the Wol- verines is the Wolverine Invitational, May 8 and 9. Their home course, while theU of M course is under construction, is Raderick Farms. There the Wolver- ines will host 17 other teams. It will be a strong field including Ohio State, Kent State, Marshall, and Ball State-all teams which have done well this season. And unfortunately for the Wolver- ines, they won't have the home course advantage. "It should be an advantage but it isn't," Carras said. "We haven't even been out there ourselves." The last tournament for the Wolver- ines will be the Big Ten Championships May 14 -16. 'There are a lot of good teams in the Big Ten this year," Carras said. "Finish- ing in the top half of the conference is going to be difficult this year. If we play with mediocrity, we-won't be in the top ten." And playing well hinges on the Wolverines' ability to practice, and they can't really do that until after school gets out. "School'll be out in a week," senior co-captain James Carson said. "Then we can concentrate on golf." DETROIT(AP)-Ke two of four Seattle hom Hanson keptDetroit's awe in check as the Mariner sweep with a 10-6 victoryl snapped the Tigers' five-g streak.
