Page 16-The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, April 20, 1993 Women's golf looks to bloom in April showers Gridders face new schedule in fall by Jaeson Rosenfeld Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's golf team continues to defy the laws of probabil- ity. The Wolverines experienced their fourth straight weekend of foul spring weather, continuing their tradition as " rain-makers" that they established in the fall. In a related story, meteoroligists across the United States are shunning weather maps, and are simplying track- ing the Michigan womnen's golf team as an indicator of bad weather. After facing less than ideal condi- tions nearly every weekend, the Wol- verines are finally beginning to feel right at home in the rain. The Wolver- ines shot rounds of 329 and 325 in the rain-shortened Lady Lion Invitational, finishing second to Methodist. Methodist beat the Wolverines out of the top spot for the secondtime of the year by shooting 323-321-644. In the fall, Methodist bested Michigan in the James Madison Invitational. Though Michigan went into the weekend hoping to win, Coach Sue LeClair said she was heartened by her team's performance. "I think they did a great job consid- ering what we played in,"LeClair said. Michigan's first day efforts were led byfreshman ShannonMcDonald who's 79helped the team to fourth place at the halfway point. The Wolverines hopped from fourth to second place on Sunday, thanks mostly to the contributions of the se- niors. Tricia Good's final-round 78, along with WendyBigler's81 and Mar Hawkins 83 warranted lauding from LeClair. "I think the seniors are really com- ing into their own," LeClair said. If the seniors are coming to their own for the Wolverines, it is none to soon. TheLadyLion Invitational marked the last tune-up tournament before the Big Ten championships, May 7,8, and 9 at Iowa City. With the biggest tourna- ment of the year fast approaching, LeClair and the Wolverines have set a goal for themselves. "We talked about it on the way home and the girls feel fifth is very realistic," LeClair said. "They're all starting to get close to the under-80 mark. If things gel together we may move up another notch." from staff reports The Michigan football team will experience something completely new October 16: middle Pennsylvania. 'We played excellent.' - Ranjiv Advani 'M'lacrosse Co-captain "We played well, but we could have playedbetter," seniorco-captain Ranjiv Advani said. "Jason (Rogers) played goalie well all game." Michigan faced Northwestern, the second seed in the West, next. The fourth quarterbegan with Michi- gan leading 8-6. Northwestern scored making it a nail-biting 8-7. 'We did no play that well," Advani said. "We spent a lot of time in the penalty box which really hurt us." However, the Wolverines soon scored three consecutive goals, pulling through to an 11-7 victory, which ad- vancedthem tothe championshipmatch Sunday afternoon. "'Theywerealotbetterandthegame was a lot closer than we expected," Advani said. Leading scorers for the Northwest- ern game included junior attackman Stevan Simich(4 goals), Henke(3), and sophomore attackman Sten Carlson(2). Sunday afternoon, the Wolverines suited up to play Purdue for the title. "Weplayed excellent," Advani said. Ten club title "(Purdue) was one of our best games all season. We played great team defense and great team offense. Everyone was hustling. It was a great game to end my Michigan lacrosse career with." Henke once again led the Wolver- ines on offense with five goals. Carlson followed with four of his own. "We were in control of the game for the most part," Advani said. "But we never really felt comfortable with our lead until the fourth quarter." One thing in particular added to the excitement of the Michigan-Purdue game. Starting goalie Kennon Broadhurst twisted his knee right after halftime and was out for the remainder of the game. Rogers came in to finish the job and keep the Wolverines alive. "I didn't expect to play in the cham- pionship game at all," Rogers said. "I was pretty nervous when I saw Kennon , go down." The third quarter was a rough one for Michigan, as their defense began to fall apart. But following a brief timeout and the conclusion of the quarter, the Wolverines pulled it together in the fourth after Rogers stopped a key shot from Purdue. "It (Broadhurst's injury) was a defi- nite turning point in the game," fresh- - man defenseman Scott Van Aman said. "It was a real test of our desire to win." The Boilermakers scored three goals in the third quarter, but Rogers shut out Purdue in the fourth. Rogers ended up with a game total of seven saves. 9 * 1220 S.University 665-7777 r I .
