Happy Birthday Israel!
A Message from Your American Friends
on Your 45th Birthday

f.

Dear Israel:

In the past 45 years you have built cities out of the
wilderness and gardens out of the desert sand. You have
taken in refugees from across the globe, rescuing your per-
secuted and destitute sisters and brothers in Yemen, Bosnia-
Hercegovina, Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. You are a
safe haven for oppressed people worldwide, a place where
they can finally live as free and equal citizens. You provided
the hospitality and support needed to absorb those weary
from the boot of oppression. We applaud these heroic efforts
that gave these people new homes, new lives and new hope.
In addition you have reaffirmed your commitment to all
humanity. You have freely donated your knowledge of arid
farming techniques in such places as Egypt, Kenya, and Texas.

You have rescued Muslim, Croatian, and Serbian refugees
fleeing the scourge of war in Bosnia- Hercegovina. You have
offered aid to those suffering from starvation in Somalia. You
have, at all times, been a loyal friend and ally of the United States.
For the past 45 years, America's friendship with you has been
based on the common moral principles of democracy, freedom
and peace. In the coming year, you face great challenges including
the difficult task of crafting a just and durable peace with your
neighbors and the fulfillment of our shared visions of social
justice. As you confront these challenges, and many others, we
offer you our deepest congratulations on your 45th birthday and
our best wishes for peace and prosperity for this year and the
years to come.
