The Michigan Daily - Weekend etc. - January 14, 1993 - Page 7 FILMS OPENING FRIDAY: T H U R S D A Y T H U R S D A Y T H U R S D A Y AuvE Or, "Disney Goes Cannibal." Touchstone Pictures presents an epic tale about some people who have to eat each other to survive. We hope Ethan Hawke's the one who gets eaten. At Showcase: 1:50, 4:20, 7:15, 9:55, 12:20. BODY OF EVIDENCE Or, "Basic Instinct 2: Two Shades of Blue." Madonna stars as Sharon Stone, with Willem Dafoe as Michael Douglas in this almost-NC-17 pseudo-smoker. But watch for the up-and-coming Julianne Moore ("The Hand that Rocks the Cradle") to transcend the tired material. At Briarwood: 10:05, 12:10, 2:15, 4:45, 7:25, 9:30, 11:30. At Showcase: 12:25, 2:40, 4:55, 7:30, 9:45, 11:50. NOWHERE To RUN Or, "Desperately Seeking Stallone." The Muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Danmme, teams up with Rosanna Arquette for another action masterpiece. Is it just us, or does it look like they shot it with leftover film on the same farm as in "Universal Soldier"? At Briarwood: 10:15, 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, 7:45, 9:50, 11:45. At Showcase: 12:40, 2:45, 4:50, 7:35, 9:40, 11:35. Prr'S FRIENDS Or, "The Big Chill Goes to Britain." Still, Kenneth Branagh really can do anything, no matter how lightweight and contrived. He even takes his shirt off for us. Also with Emma Thompson, Rita Rudner and Stephen Fry. At Ann Arbor 1 & 2: 12:45, 2:50, 5, 7:20, 9:40. At Showcase: 12:30, 2:50, 5:10, 7:55, 10:15, 12:20. Willem Dafoe and Madonna prepare to get busy in "Body of Evidence" FILMS HOLDING: ALADDIN Or, "The Arabian Nights Go P.C." Still, it's probably the best movie of the Christmas season - it's an animated feature, not a cartoon, damnit! Robin Williams will never find a better role (at least it's not in "Toys.") At Briarwood: 10:05, 12, 2:10, 4:15, 7, 9, 11:15. At Showcase: 12:05, 2:20, 4:35, 7, 9, 11. THjE BODYGUARD Or, "Robin Hood's Greatest Love of All." The public has decided to chuck the critics and make this one of the biggest hits of the holiday season. But you're smarter than that, aren't you? Trust us, it really is awful. Scripted by Larry "never had it, never will" Kasdan. At Briarwood: 7:15, 9:45, 12:05. At Showcase: 1, 3:45, 7:25, 10:10, 12:30. CHAPLIN Or, "Less Than Chaplin." Robert Downey Jr. of the criminally long eyelashes actually gives a good, hell, call it great performance as the * Tramp; too bad director Dick Attenborough ("Cry Freedom") couldn't make a decent picture to save his life. At Briarwood: 10:15, 1:10, 4, 7:05' 9:55. At Showcase: 1:05, 4:05, 7:30, 10:20. THE DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Or, "Mr. Robinson Goes to Washing- ton." Eddie Murphy fails to escape his heh-heh-heh "Beverly Hills Cop" persona in this, the latest schlock from Hollywood Pictures. At Showcase: 12, 2:20,4:40, 7. A FEw GOOD MEN Or, "Top Gun Goes to Court." Or, "A Few Good Scenes." Rob Reiner's latest lowest common denominator blockbuster is pretty good if you haven't seen "The Caine Mutiny" or any other court- room drama ever made. But Tom Cruise really is irresistible. At Briarwood: 10, 12:45, 3:45, 7, 9:40, 12:05. At Showcase: 1, 4, 7:10, 10:05, 12:35. FOREVER YOUNG Or, "Forever Naked." This remake of "Always" stars Mel Gibson and his butt. People who like this sort of shit will find this the sort of shit they like. At Showcase: 12:15, 2:35, 4:55, 7:25, 9:40, 11:50. HOFFA Or, "Throw Mamet From the Train." Lousy director Danny DeVito teams up with lousy screenwriter David Mamet for a, well, fucking abominable movie bio. If we see one more overhead crane shot ... At Ann Arbor 1 & 2: 1:20, 4:15, 7:05, 9:55. At Showcase: 1:10, 4:05, 7:05, 10. 0 HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YoK Or, "Home Alone I: The Re- make." Pat Collins called it "The Best Christmas Movie Ever," so it must be good. Even folks who were suckers for Macaulay in the first one can't stand the sequel. At Briarwood: 10, 12:15, 2:35, 4:55. HOWARDS END Or, "Merchant Ivory are Gods." Somebody told us that this flick ain't so bad. At State: Friday at 4:30, 9:15, 11:45; Saturday and Sunday at 4:30, 7, 11:45. THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS Or, "The Unbearable Hollywoodizing of Dan." Daniel Day-Lewis as the next action hero? Well, he's better looking than Arnie. At State: 4:30, 7, 9:30. LEPRECHAUN Or, "Chucky Goes to Ireland." Whoever did this is no Sam Raimi. Wait for "Army of Darkness" instead. At Briarwood: 10, 12:15, 2:40, 5:05, 7:30, 9:55, 12:05. At Showcase: 12, 2:45, 9:55, 11:55. MALcoLM X Or, "Do the 200-Minute Thing." Three hours and twenty minutes of Spike Lee? You'll wish it was longer. Not only is this movie a cultural phenomenon, it's good. Set aside some time and see it before it leaves. You owe it to yourself. At Showcase: 9:20 only. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Or, "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Hate Bob Redford." If you want a nice coming-of-age drama, go see "Flirting" at the Michigan. If you want to catch up on sleep, maybe this Bob Redford film's for you. At Showcase: 12:10,4:45, 7:20. RocKv HORROR PICTURE SHOW No advance screening; not yet re- viewed. At State: 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. SCENT OF A WOMAN Or, "Smell of a Dog." Hoo-hah? Al Pacino gives a performance that can only be called a tour-de-force; too bad the movie's not really about him. Chris O'Donnell stars as a boarding school kid who gains redemption not ratting on a bunch of upper-class prigs who hate his guts anyway. At Briarwood: 10, 1, 4, 7:05, 10:15. UNDER SIEGE Or, "Hard to Mark for Death above the Law." If Kevin Kline got an Oscar for yelling "Asshole" in "A Fish Called Wanda," 0 Tommy Lee Jones should at least get a nomination for "This is not the FURTING (1992) Though it is a continuation of the saga started in "The Year My Voice Broke," this fine film stands on its own as a must-see.
