In 1983, North Carolina State, under then-coach Jim Valvano, pulled off the biggest upset in tournament history, defeating the Cougars, 54-52. Lorenzo Charles' buzzer beater knocked Hakeern Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler from that year's tournament. The 1984 championship was billed as "The Battle of the Big Men" as Olajuwon squared off against Georgetown's Patrick Ewing. Ewing and the Hoyas prevailed, 84-75. (AP) - Steffi Graf overcame an in- jury and a determined Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win her fourth Family Circle Cup title Sunday. The top-seeded Graf outlasted No. 2 Sanchez Vicario 7-6 (10-8), 6- 1 after falling behind 5-3 and sus- taining a slightly sprained ligament in her left knee. Remarkably, the 23-year-old German powered through Sanchez Vicario after getting her knee wrapped for support between sets following a lengthy tiebreaker. "It's clay courts. That's what saved me. I could slide towards the ball, but I really couldn't twist very much," said Graf, who said she sustained the injury trailing 6-5 in the opening set. "I just kept the ball in play somehow. I got going a little bit more and went for my shots a lit- tle bit more." Graf, who only entered last AP PHOTOweekend after Monica Seles dropped out, earned $150,000 for the victory. to She became the all-time leading money-winner in the 21-year history of the event with $316,575 in six ap- pearances. Graf's other titles came in 1986, 1987 and 1989. Graf, ranked second in the world, was actually more effective after having the knee worked on. She cut down on her errors, from 23 in the first set to 6 the rest of the way. She was far more patient on each point, too, allowing Sanchez Vicario to 0 force the play. "I didn't make as many mis- takes," Graf said.-"In the second set, she got a bit impatient, she made a lot of errors and I played a lot smarter." Kathleen Stroia, head trainer for the WTA, said Graf's injury would be reassessed in a couple of days but expected her to be ready for her next tournament, in Hamburg, Germany, beginning April 26. The usually steady Sanchez Vicario, who won the final nine games to defeat Jennifer Capriati in the semifinals, broke down several times in the second set as Graf won her 71st career singles title. Steffi Graf beat Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, 1 capture the Family Circle Cup in Hilton Head, S.C. this weekend. -. rfrom - Gradu n B ACK PACK B R I E F C A S E 7115 l * BR AS The University of MichigaTs CareerYPlannient r? Wednesday, May 5 at the Michigan Union Noon until 6 pm Detroit drops sprng finale, 4-3 0 VANCOUVER, B.C. (AP) - Erik Hanson completed an outstand- ing spring turnaround for the Seattle Mariners by pitching seven shutout innings in a 4-3 victory over the De- troit Tigers on Sunday. After a 1-10 start, the Mariners finished with a 16-14 spring training record by winning their last eight. The Tigers were 8-22-1 this spring. Hanson, trying to regain the form that helped him win 18 games in 1990, improved his spring record to 3-1 by allowing only two singles in his seven innings. He struck out 11 and walked one in lowering his ERA from 2.57 to 1.93. "I'll tell you what, if he pitches like that during the season he's go- ing to win a lot of games," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. Hanson, a 17-game loser last sea- son, said he had all three of his pitches working - a fastball, curve- ball and changeup. "When all three are working, it builds confidence," he said. Hanson, a 27-year-old right-han- der, is scheduled to be Seattle's No. 3 starter and will make his first regu- lar-season start Friday night in the Kingdome against Baltimore. Randy Johnson and Chris Bosio will pitch Seattle's first two games. The Mariners took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off Tigers starter John Doherty (0-4). Bill Haselman and Rich Amaral had RBI singles and Haselman scored on a Travis Fryman error. Seattle went ahead 4-0 in the third on Jay Buhner's sacrifice fly. The Tigers made it interesting in the ninth after Dan Gladden's RBI sin- gle off rookie reliever Dave Wain- house in the eighth made it 4-1. Rookie reliever Mike Hampton loaded the bases on a single by Fry- man and walks to Cecil Fielder and Kirk Gibson. Chad Kreuter had an RBI single and Scott Livingston had an RBI on a fielder's choice ground- out. Piniella brought in Rich DeLucia to get Milt Cuyler to fly out for the final out. DeLucia got his first save of the spring. Tigers open 1993 season tonight against Oakland e0 OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - With a later than usual starting time and Mike Moore on the mound, opening day.at Oakland Coliseum is likely to stretch late into Monday night. Moore will take the mound in his debut for the Detroit Tigers against his old team, the Athletics. The left-hander spent four sea- sons in Oakland, leading the A's in victories last year with a 17-12 mark and 4.12 ERA in 1992. Moore then .Careers In Pro Sports NBA NFL MLB NHL ;Z jumped to Detroit, signing a three- year, $10 million deal. Oakland manager Tony La Russa said just because the A's are familiar with Moore and he with them doesn't mean either team will have an edge. "We're facing a real good pitcher," he said. "One thing I like about him is he has a lot of ways to beat you." Since Moore's departure, Bob Welch has emerged as the A's No. 1 starter and will face his former teammates. Welch hasn't been stellar this spring but is definitely healthier than last season, when he opened the sea- son on the disabled list with a variety of injuries and wound up making a career-low 20 appearances. For the past five years, Dave Stewart has been on the mound to start the season for the Athletics and was 4-0 during that span. In another reminder of A's sea- sons past, Carney Lansford will throw out the first pitch sometime around 8:05 p.m. PDT. The A's third baseman for 10 seasons, he retired at 0 the end of last season.
