Page 10-The Michigan Daily- Monday, April 5,1993 WHO~ WHA [WHERE WHEN i ~iiIY ~ Stolen Classic In the tradition of Italian realist cin- ema like Vittoria DeSica's "Umberto D," comes "Il Ladro di Bambini" or "The Stolen Children," directed by Gianni Amelio. The film has every right to be a sappy sentimental "Rain Man" meets "Scent of a Woman" fam- ily feature. In fact, if it had been made in Hollywood, it probably would have emgedas "Three Fugitives," or some such piece of tripe. Instead, "The Sto- len Children" tells its story simply, without resorting to- cheap tear-pro- voking. Two children, a young boy and his eleven-year old sister who has been forced intoprostitution by theirmother, are being escorted to an orphanage by a reluctant soldier (Enrico Lo Verso). The surly, bitter children and the sol- dier grate On each other's nerves, until gradually they come to know and even carefor each other. The plot may sound hokey, but the film's honesty makes "Stolen Children" fresh and truly heart- breaking. Don't miss it. The film plays tonight at 7:30 and tomorrow at 5 at the Michigan Theater. Of course, Dre takes some time to cover old ground, and slips a bit on the tracks "A Nigga Witta Gun" and "Rat- Tat-Tat-Tat." Regardless of the crazy- hype production on these pieces, I can't get wit the message that a ruthless nigga wit a gun somehow advances a "master plan" (sure, the racists'). Check the self- hatred and try again, Dre. Judging from these lyrics, you would think nobody told him about the gang truce in Los Angeles. The Chronic's last unlisted track, "Bitches Ain't Shit," is a hardcore clas- sic. Over a mesmerizing beat, the posse runs down the blues about shaky char- acters like Snoop's old "G" and Eric Wright. This track is exemplary of the Doctor's appeal: He doesn't claim bullshit moral high ground against the wicked, but instead soaks himself in their iniquities. Some P.C. boot-mouths might portray Dre as a villian for this, but f- that-attacking minorities' rights to free speech doesn't eliminate intolerance, it intensifies racism. Re- gardless of silly political games of the current time, The Chronic is a timeless masterpiece. -Forrest Green III Unsane Singles 89-92 Matador Records Every band seems to have a strange tale or two to tell about how they got where they're at. Unsane looks like they wrote the book. From a death in the band (drummer Charlie Ondras over- dosed on heroin in 1992), and from miscues along the way (signing with a record label that used their money to purchase cocaine), Unsane has defi- nitely had more than their share of trials and tribulations along the way. "Singles 89-92" effectively wraps up the out of print oddities that the band offered be- fore the death of Ondras, thus putting to rest a chapter in their existence. As the band name would indicate Unsane isjust exactly that, and "Singles 89-92" captures the essence of thispow- erful hardcore trio, all the way from their "This Town" 7" to the "Bath" LP. Their ear splitting riffs and thunderous rhythms makes it kind of scary to think what these guys would do if it weren't for their music. This stuff moves fast, so step off if you're lagging behind. Some of the recordings on the album are a little too raw and under-produced, but for fans of older Unsane material, the record serves its function well. As far as the future goes, Vinnie Signorelli has been signed on as a replacement drummer, so look for new Unsane ma- terial to come out soon. -Nima Hodaei Valentina Scalici gives a haunting performance in "Il Ladro di Bambini." Unsane has gone through some strange experiences, but their thunderous music is worth a listen. " s e ~ a ix p " s " 35TH AVE.
