Jews and Muslims for Better Understanding (JAM) hopes to ease ethnic tensions through discussions, field trips and sharing customs. "The goal is to bring together Jewish and Muslim students to de- velop constructive dialogue between students," said Muhammad Farha, an LSA senior and JAM member. Members of the University's Is- lamic Circle made the first move in establishing a dialogue. They contacted members of Hil- lel, the Jewish student organization, to express concern after the Hillel building suffered racially-motivated vandalism. "I was touched and appreciated this initial contact by the Islamic Circle," said Ken Goldstein, a Rack- ham student and chair of Hillel's governing board. The two groups met subsequently and held productive discussions, Farha said. "It's not about the Arab-Israeli conflict, it's about giving each other support. Only since modern Zionism Cosgrove, ansLSA senior and mem- ber of Hillel's governing board. After improving understanding between the two groups by stressing the religious and cultural similari- ties, JAM will attempt to objectively address the Arab-Israeli conflict, Farha said. "We want to allay any misunder- standings and stereotypes through this dialogue," he added. Syed Ahmed, an LSA senior and JAM founder, said, "We would like to have discussions without going overboard." The organization will hold meet- ings and field trips to promote un- derstanding between the two groups. The two groups will also attend each other's religious services. Members also plan to work to- gether to understand the war in the former Yugoslavia. "Both Jews and Muslims have faced persecution and we are touched by human rights violations," Cosgrove noted. Although the Jewish and Muslim communities founded the organiza- tion, the group is open to all stu- dents. * Address City, State Zip ..t.'.. .................. . . ................ .
