The Michigan Daily--Sports Monday-- March 29,1993 - Page 9 Michigan Hockey 1992-93 Veteran Wolverines on quest for * eighth national championship by Brett Forrest and Tim Rardin Daily Hockey Writers The Michigan hockey team reached the NCAA semifinals for the second straight year with a 4-3 overtime victory over Wisconsin Saturday. Heading into Milwaukee, the Wolverines have already made this season one to remember. With the victory over the Bad- gers, Michigan has now reached the 30-victory plateau three straight sea- sons. Michigan coach Red Berenson also earned his 200th victory at Michigan against Ohio State March 6. Berenson is only the third Wolverine coach to achieve this feat. The Wolverines, who have been ranked No. 2 in the country for most of the season, also won their fifth straight Great Lakes Invitational with an 8-3 victory over Northern Michigan at Joe Louis Arena Dec. 27. (top right) Goaltender Steve Shields won the CCHA's Best Goaltender Award, and has a goals against aver- age of 2.17 so far this season. (center) Shields and defenseman Pat O Neaton were named to the CCHA first team this season. Senior left wing Dave Roberts, who earned a spot on the CCHA second team along with junior David Oliver, leads the team in points (64), and scored the overtime game-win- ner against Wisconsin. (center left) The Michigan defense gives up an average of 25 shots per game and the team leads the nation in goals against average (2.32). (second from bottom) However, the Wolverines were again thwarted by Lake Superior in the CCHA playoffs, losing to the Lakers, 5-3, in the league semifinals March 20. (bottom) This year's scoring attack is de- cidedly more balanced than last year's, when Denny Felsner led the team with 94 points. Five players boast 50 points or more, and two others have more than 40 on the sea- son, as the Wolverines were first in the league and are second in the na- tion in goals per game (6.02) In ad- dition, five players have scored at least 20 goals, and seven different players were named CCHA Players of the Week. The Wolverines have improved their NCAA tournament showing in the last two years, making it to the quarterfinal round in 1991, and the semifinals last year. This year, Michigan will face Maine, who has lost just once in 43 games this sea- son, in the semis Thursday. Though Michigan has the most ti- tles in the history of the NCAA hockey championships, the Wolver- ines have not won since 1964. Michigan last reached the final game in 1977.
