0 Page 2-The Michigan Daily- Spring Fashion -- March 25, 1993 True fashion is reserved only for the boldest among us SPRINQ FASHION 199$ IN - Strips, Waorian dmdyweai, subtle pattern mixing, early '80s revisionism, Psychedelic love wear. OUT - Sideburns, rave wear, Doc Martens bold colors, grunge, conspicuous name brands. Nab, too easy. And more importantly, it's all wrong. Fashion is not about bowing before tyrannical style gods. It's not about slavishly following "in" and "out" lists graciously provided by editors of glossy magazines. It's not about paying extortionist rates for; mannequin-ready, trend-by-numbers,. assembly-line street chic at clothing supermarkets (that's severely dated by the time it hits the racks). It's definitely not about what Madonna (yawn) is wearing this week. Especially since she's probably getting her cues from someone that's paid togo out and findtherealdeal so she can rip it off and dilute it for the masses. No, it's not even about people like Marc Jacobs' (the brain-child behind Perry Ellis) tongue-in-cheek "high- fashion" take on grunge - When it comes to paying $350 for a nappy flannel shirt, I just don't get the joke. Fashion, real fashion, is about taking risks. It's about those fearless few that dare to step outside of the tried and true, the ones who ignore the rules laid down by the fashion police. It's about resale shops, Meijer's Thrifty Acres, sporting goods stores, costume shops even. The daring domos that fly in the face of convention, get laughed at, and kick a look that in six months or ayear later we'll all be breaking down the doors of Urban Outfitters to get our grubby little paws on. Of course, at that point the ones that made it happen have already moved on to something new. This probably sounds pretentious and over-glamorized, but so be it. The Jean-Paul Gaultiers and Moschinos of the world have to shock us with complete over the top outrageousness just to get us to wake up and take notice. Designers like Gaultier have also made a mark on fashion by utilizing what may have once been considered a flaw into an asset. Feel like your nose is too big? Throw a huge gold hoop in their and flaunt it, baby. Take what ya got and work it, as Ru~aul would say. Nothing's sexier or more attractive than a suit of self-confidence. It's even more effective than one of those tight little black numbers by Azzedine Alaia (even though that wouldn't hurt). Hopefully, we've come pretty close to achieving a little bit of that form of expression. Creating moods, using the right models, and kicking a fresh vibe was just as important as the clothing we chose. Mixing mediums and messages (however subtle or apparent) to create something fun to look at was also a high priority. We feel that we definitely pulled that one off. Enjoy.
