The Michigan Daily -Wednesday, March 24, 1993 - Page 7 Going ga-ga over Goo Goo by Andy Cahn Back in 1982, no one expected that a band from Minneapolis called the Replacements would have an impact on anyone's life. After their first album, "Sony Ma, Forgot to Take out the Trash" came out, even rock journalist/guru Dave Marsh wrote, "Will we ever hear from these guys again? Who cares?" Eleven years and one breakup later, as the former members try to recapture the magic they eventually created, it is the Goo Goo Dolls who emerge as the ideal, dare I say, replacement. While Paul Westerberg sings, "Na na na...," this band from Buffalo, NY puts out a stellar record, "SuperstarCarWash," with some of the highest energy pop tunes since "Pleased toMeetMe."Though the influence is very clear throughout the disc, do the Dolls forge theirown identity, or are they merely 'Matsmania? BassistRobbieGoo (they do thatRamonesname-thing) said theirhistory has been similar to that of the Replacements. "Our first record was a lot like 'Sony Ma ..."' he said, "and some of the hardcore kids who were with us back then think we have sold out with our current stuff." The fact is, they only played stuff like that because they didn't know what they were doing. Once they really learned how to play their instruments, they figured out how to put together tunes that more than just a handful of flannel- clad dudes would be into. "SuperstarCarWash" is not a mosh-fest, but it does have much more guts than the last two Replacements discs. Fans of the Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr. should make room for it in their collections, while fans of Material Issue will realize they have been wasting their time. Though the Goo Goo Dolls latest release is going to be pushed hard by Warner Brothers, itis hardly a majorlabel selloutdisc. Goo said, "We recorded it for Metal Blade, but Warner liked it and they wanted to promote it. We were surprised." It might seem like they are being pushed as the "New Replacements" but this is not entirely true. The band does not hide the influence, for the 'Mats are thanked in the liner notes, and Westerberg wrote the lyrics for the first single, "We Are the Normal." "If you're an alternative band," Goo said, "You're going to be grouped into some sound. There's Manchester, Seattle, Athens, but we're obviously into the Minnesota sound." So, it is more than just record label created media hype. They are the hand- picked successors to the throne. Besides, it's hard tobearipoff band with aname like Goo Goo Dolls. "We want to keep people from taking us seriously," Goo said. Thatmustmean we shouldn't take that comment seriously either, and admit that these guys are for real. The 0Goo o Dolls will open for SoulAsylumtomorrow night at Hill Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students and $15for civilians. Call 763- TKTS for more info. The show starts at 8 PM. She by Uz Shaw At the beginning of the winter se- mester, when Professor Thylias Moss found herself at the University, it was for many reasons, personal and profes- sional. But, as with her reasons for writing, the most outstanding reason had to do with culture. Professor Moss moved to Ann Arbor from Boston to foster the growth of her family and her career. "I saw that this university, overall, needed the perspective of an African- American female, especially inthis [En- glish] department," she said ofherdeci- sion to teach here over five other insti- tutions. The fact that Michigan is central to her family home and many different feels thatany exposure to minority writ- ings is important, as is the minority point of view on traditional pieces of literature. "I like teaching "Moby Dick" be- cause I like the poetry of it, but there are certain questions, along with the obvi- ous ones, that my perspective will bring into the class. For example, where are the women in this book? They have to be somewhere, where are they? Points like these are just as important as the usual questions," she said. Presently, the best thing going in ProfessorMoss's life isjust the fact that she's living. She and her husband are both employed by the University, and are getting ready for their 20th wedding anniversary, and their second son, Ansted, is getting ready to turn two. These things, along with her first son, six-year-old Dennis, are the most im- portant things in her life right now. Her writing career is especially important to her just because she feels that she was never meant to make it this far. "I love the irony of me, an African- American woman, writing books and teaching English. I just feel like saying to everyone: 'This was not supposed to happen to our race,' if there was one thing we were not to be taught it was how to read and write ... and now I'm w making a career of it." As long as people continue to like her writing and publishers continue to produce her works, Professor Moss will be happy. She is about to release a children's book, as well as a collection of new and selected works of which she is very proud. It's a feat that not many woman have accomplished at her age, so she is especially pleased to be doing- it as a young African-American. Her previous works, which include collec- tions of poetry such as "Pyramid of Bone" and "Hosiery Seams on a Bow- legged Woman" are well known within the literary community. Professor THYLIAS MOSS will be giving a free reading at the Rackham Amphitheater at 5p.m. on March 25. GOODIBo.K THIS SUMMER. { I w .l i ,-'
