However, Visions in Action, a non-profit organi- zation, is providing internships in Af- rica that focus on urban development. Students can develop skills in a field of their choice while working as part of a community of volunteers. Michael Smith, director of U.S. programs at Visions, said the program offers many opportunities in a variety of work settings. "For anyone interested in business or women's studies, the African minis- ter of Finance and Commerce needs interns to help him implement ideas for women starting their own business," Smith said. The itinerary for the one-year pro- gram includes amonth-long orientation to acquaint students with the language and culture. Coed group housing is fur- nished in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and BurkinaFaso.During orientation, interns are free to travel within the host country.. Kerstin Stout, academic secretary at the University's Office of International Programs, said the department does not offer any African programs. However, African American Stud- ies Prof. Gracia Clark said the Office of International Programs is working on establishing an exchange program with the University of Ghana to be available during the 1994-95 academic year. "Academic programs are illuminat- ing because students exposure to Afri- can scholars provides an opportunity to see differences between European and African thought," Clark said. Visions Head Director Shaun 'Academic programs are illuminating because student's exposure to African scholars provides an opportunity to see differences between European and African thought.' - Gracia Clark African American Studies professor, Skelton said student enrichment is the primary focus of the organization's over- all objectives. "The program is really geared toward benefiting the individual more than the community itself. It is pretty hard for one person to make a large scale difference in a year." Urban development Prof. James Chaffers said while programs like Vi- sions in Action generally operate under good intentions, participants should be aware that change is not necessarily progressive. "If you are talking about develop- ment anywhere, try to make sure the initiative is in the best interest of the country," Chaffers said. "The United States all too often acts as agents with- out having first hand knowledge on issues themselves. "Often times development can un- dermine indigenous ways of doing things if visitors aren't careful," he added. In this regard, Chaffers said students who are willing to listen are more valu- able assets to the people of the country and the program itself. Michigan Alumni work here: The Wall Street Journal The New York Times The Washington Post The Detroit Free Press The Detroit News NBC Sports Associated Press United Press International Scientific American Time Newsweek Sports Illustrated USA Today Because they worked here: riy by Julie Robinson A new movement aimed at uniting Latino students on campus is underway, and gaining University recognition is a primary goal. The second of two mass meetings was held Tuesday night at the University's Trotter I-ouse to recruit students to participate in a movement that will attempt to lessen alienation minority students may feel upon enter- ing college. The approximately 75 students at the meeting, who came from different areas of the Latino community, agreed to draft a letter to University officials enumerating their requests. "We are a minority among a minor- ity," said LSA junior Louis Pichardo, the spokesperson for the Socially Ac- tive Latino Students Association. "When the University talks about African Americans and does something for their advancement they think 'O.K., all minorities are happy now,' but that's not true. We're coming now and are going to be knocking on their door," she said. Participants said demands will in- cludeincreasing Latino faculty and staff, offering incoming students a choice in housing to give them the opportunity to live in a predominantly Latino hall, expanding the Latino studies program into a department and forming a cul- tural center on Central Campus. Rebecca Pachuco, an LSA sopho- more, said she is excited about the idea of a cultural center. "It would be some 'When the University talks about African Americans and does something for their advancement they think 'O.K. all minorites are happy now buy that's not true. We're coming now and are going to be knocking on their door.' - Louis Pichardo SALSA spokesperson place where we can get together and feel comfortable knowing that we have the support of the University," she said. "I know a lot of otherschools have them and they have worked out." Other goals of the umbrella group include welcoming new students, serv- ing as a forum to express problems, and strengthening the voice of Latino stu- dents on campus while educating oth- ers. Pichardosaidthemeeting washighly successful. "There werealotofus thatfoundout that we have many things in common that can unite the Latino/a community here at U of M," he said. "This is a big place, you can feel lonely and need the support of your people.... It's hard to find information, make friends, andlearn about how to get involved."
