Close encounters with 'Fire' by Alison Levy and Michael Thompson Back in the seventies when people were happy, they wore crappy clothes, the sideburns were bushier, and the music was good, a poor sap was abducted for a few days of R&R by some evil aliens. His name was Travis Walton. This is the Fire in the Sky written by Tracy Torme; directed by Robert Lieberman; with Robert Patrick, D.B. Sweeney and Craig Sheffer review of his story. Oh, and the story of his five friends who were accused by James Garner of killing him. Michael: Oh, boy, what an exciting concept! An ex- panded two hour "Unsolved Mysteries," minus Robert Stack and his tremendous acting ability. Alison: Really? It's not a concept, it's a true story. Didn't you read the press kit? I'm glad Robert Stack wasn't in this film, 'cause that left more time for the comic genius of Craig Sheffer ("A River Runs Through It"), who isn't in the movie nearly enough. Really, really, funny. Michael: Whatever. Ile and the story were hardly enough to sustain a feature length movie. I kept waiting for the commercial break so I could go get my Coke and Chips. Alison: First, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I don't think they sell chips at the theaters. Second, by story do you mean the screenplay, penned by fabulously brilliant and lovable Tracy Torme? The only huge problem I had was too little Craig and too much of the bitchy wife. But, I guess if I lived in Snowflake, Arizona, I'd be pretty crabby too. Michael: What a kiss-ass; he's not going to give you ajob Alison, deal with it. And you're not going to meet Craig Sheffer or that other unmentionable. And the wife was supposed to be crabby, the whole town was. Or did you miss that point while you were cowering in your seat during the operation sequence? Alison: Michael, Michael, Michael. Why don't you enjoy the calming effect of several Valium, while I put this article back in focus. The only reason I was cowering was because I was gagging. That was seriously the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. You're lucky there were no breaks to get chips, 'cause I would have puked them up all over you. As God as my witness, I would rather sit directly across from Michael Madsen in "Reservoir Dogs" while he cut some guy's ear off, instead of sit through that again. Michael: What? I fell asleep during all that talking. It wasn't that bad, Alison. We had this discussion in our last article. You have to start remembering that it's just a movie, OK? Now, granted, this was based on a true story and hey, I believe it, but what we saw was not, I repeat, was not real. Got it? Alison: It was too, real. Travis Walton said so. Once again I must refer you to the press kit. If you don't start reading them, I refuse to write any more articles with you. That's what I liked about it, that something, seemingly unreal, really was. I thought the acting helped out a lot in that respect. Michael: Get off the Craig Sheffer thing. Yes, the acting was good and so was the writing, it was the story I had a problem with. And I read the press kit so I know it was real, it just wasn't interesting enough. Now I'm going back to sleep so you can go on about Tim Roth or whoever. Alison: Fine. But, TunRoth wasn't in this movie. Perhaps you have a serious attention disorder. And, I wasn't talking about Craig Sheffer this time. I was talking about Robert Patrick ("Terminator 2") and D.B. Sweeney ("The Cutting Edge").I liked the way that their ordeals paralleled each other and Patrick's character Mike was more affected by the abuse of society than his friend Travis (Sweeney), who was actually taken by the aliens. Also, Sweeney was amazing as the reclusive Travis who acted like a frightened animal after the attack of his well-wishing friends. The only thing I couldn't figure out was why Henry Thomas' character had such a hard time dealing with the whole thing. E.T. fucking lived in his closetfor aboutayear, for God's sake. Hey, wakeup. It's your turn. Michael: Another fucking speech. Whatever. Yeah, the parallel was good, but not enough. And yeah, Henry Thomas was kind of weird. Maybe puberty was really hard on him, I don't know. Whatever the case may be, this movie had a lot of the right things, but just didn't make it. Alison: Well, at least I have interesting things to say instead of leaching off the small dribble that you put out. Overall, I liked the film. But, unfortunately for you I have to go fill out my tax forms because he will give me ajob. lie said so. Michael: As they say in Hollywood, trust me, Alison. Alison: Same to you. Michael: And more of it, you pre-pubescent psuedo critic. Alison: If I were pre-pubescent, I would write something really mean, but I'm not, so I won't, you big ninny. Michael: Well, that's all the time, space and patience we have! Go see the movie and until next time the terminal is closed. FIRE IN THE SKY RZECORDS Continued from page S Although such freedom can be equally as taxing on the performer's and listener's concentration, each piece on "from p.s. 122" creates a thrilling dy- namic without overkilling each piece's unique methodology. Since each solo had to be recorded individually, the CD uniquely collects some of the downtown's most forth- right improvisation (complete with Dunaway's balloon torture, Jauniaux's contorted vocals, and Cartwright's frigid winds). But, if that doesn't blow your horn, it's worth a listen just to hear shears played, along with a stick violin, toy piano, "junk," and a travicello- mutant spawns of America's armpit. -Chris Wyrod The Loud Family Plants And Birds And Rocks And Things Alias Records Scott Miller has broken up Game Theory and formed the Loud Family, but he remains the same Big Star/Alex Chilton devotee he has been throughout his career. On the first Loud Family album, "Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things," Miller again works with his long-time producer Mitch Easter, who produced three Game Theory al- bums. By now, Miller's songwriting is so firmly entrenched that he cannot write a song which doesn't resemble Alex Chilton. However, they are very good Alex Chilton songs, full of big, bell-toned guitars and elliptical melo- dies; theyare better than anything Chilton himself is writing these days. Miller may realize the striking simi- larity between Chilton and himself in not only their writing but even in their voices. Perhaps this is the reason for the audio experimentation on "Plants ...' and the last Game Theory album. All of is playing at Showcase. the overdubbed vocal snippets, special tape effects, and annoying wordplay seem like hopeless attempts to mask Miller's lack of original ideas. At times it winds up sounding like the Beatles's "Revolution 9" played simultaneously with Big Star's "September Gurls," but more often than not Miller and Easter rely on straightforward productions of the songs. Miller's hooks and melodies are from old-school pop, music that will sound traditional no matter what the context, so the all the experimentation is futile. All the tinkering doesn't hurt the genu- ine pop masterpieces here (such as the delirious one-twopunch of"Jimmy Still Comes Around" and "Take Me Down (Too Halloo)") but it nevertheless dis- tracts. There are enough solid songs to make this worthwhile for power-pop fans, but in the end this is pure pop for people with patience. -Tom Erlewine r/f f"- -part-time postitions available as -co-facilitate discussion groups for incoming Qualifications: .at least sophomore standing at time of application -experience with workshop presentations, teaching employment period - June 1 to August 13 must be available two week-day mornings each week during spring and summer terms.
