Page 8-The Michigan Daily-Sports Monday- March 15,1993 DIVERS Continued from page 1 third in the 1-meter. In her first sea- son as a Wolverine, Zarse has al- ready established herself as a major force in women's diving. "No one really expected her to do that well," Woods said. "It's espe- cially impressive that she's a fresh- man." Diving coach Dicl Kimball said both divers' turned in good dives. "Carrie dove very well," Kimball said. "She chose to dive springboard and was right in the hunt in both. She dove very consistently. Cinna- mon, on springboard, did real well. She dove great on tower. I was re- ally pleased with both of their per- formances." However, missing from the qualifiers was Wolverine tri-captain Margie Stoll whose bout with the flu hindered her diving. "Margie dove well on tower but her sickness made it really difficult for her," Kimball said. "If she had felt better, she would have had a much better performance." On the men's side of the draw, the Wolverines achieved their goal of qualifying two divers for the NCAA championship meet March 25-27 in Indianapolis. Sophomore Abel Sanchez made his first appearance at a major com- petition and was impressive finish- ing second on the 10-meter platform and 10th on the 3-meter board. His sixth place finish overall qualified " him for the national championship. Kimball told Sanchez just before the platform competition that he needed a first or second place to qualify for the NCAAs, and Sanchez responded. "I was most pleased that I did well on the 10-meter," Sanchez said. "I didn't do that well on the 3-meter, but on the 10, I dove consistently and I was very pleased." Kimball said Sanchez's perfor- mance pleased him, especially since Sanchez did not compete in the Big Ten Championships earlier this month. "Abel did a great job on tower to get him in the NCAA meet," Kim- ball said. "He didn't compete at Big Tens and did a great job of showing that he maybe should have been there (at Big Tens)." The other Michigan qualifier was senior Eric Lesser. Lesser had also battled the flu this week, and al- though he qualified, he said he was not happy with his performances. Lesser finished third on the platform and eighth on the springboard to pull out a seventh place finish overall, allowing him to capture the final qualifying spot for the NCAAs. "I'm happy I made it," Lesser said. "I didn't dive as well as I hoped. We only had four days (to prepare). But I'm happy I made it." Lesser said he hopes he can come back and perform better at the NCAAs in order to hold off Texas for second place. "As a team, we have to watch Texas (at NCAAs)," Lesser said. "Diving will be important in order for us to get second. (As a diver), I hope Texas doesn't beat us by div- ing. Stanford (the NCAA favorite) looks untouchable." Ohio State's Yoshihiro Sakata won both springboard events. Gymnasts improve, fall short' by Scott Burton Daily Sports Writer All year, the Michigan's -men's gymnastics team had been talking about producing a score in the mid- 270's. Finally, at Saturday's Michi- gan Invitational at Cliff Keen arena it came-- a season high 275.70. Time for celebration, right? Not quite. While the score excited the Wolverines, instead of quenching the team's thirst, it only left the team wanting more. More consistency, more mental toughness, more im- provement - hopefully all in time for next weekend's Big Ten cham- pionships at Minnesota. "275 is a great score, but we did not do our best and that's impor- tant," Michigan coach Bob Darden said. "But the score sets a good mental framework - it really gets the team excited about what they can do. "We're coming closer to solidify- ing a healthy team. They realize now with this lineup that we can forge into the Big Ten's knowing that we hit, we're in contention - we miss, we go home with our tails in our legs." Michigan's score was good for second place in the Michigan Invita- tional and left it a slim five hun- dredths of a point behind first place Illinois Chicago. The Flames pro- duced their season-high score with a 275.75 to win the meet. "It was our best performance so far this year," UIC coach C.J. John- son said. "We just put everything together from the season. I can't put a finger on what it was. The kids were up for it and the facility was excellent - that brings you up also." Finishing behind the Flames and the Wolverines at the Invitational were Kent State (274.60), Temple (272.85) and Western Michigan (269.75). Michigan's established its sea- son-breaking pace by the first event on the day - the floor exercise. Consistently a strength for the Wolverines all season, Saturday's 47.25 score outdid all their efforts on the year. Raul Molina headed the floor exercise seasonahigh score with a 9.65, good for second place. However, the Wolverines lost some of their momentum by the sec- ond event due to some problems on the pommel horse. Their 44.00 score on the event was good for third in the meet, but their performance left them short of previous standards. "I can't understand it. The begin- ning of the year we were just rock- ing on horse," Darden said. "But these last two meets - maybe there's been a pommel horse virus running around the gym. "After coming off of a real posi- tive event, it really takes the wind out of our sails." The lost momentum was recap- tured quickly, though, thanks in part to a standout effort by Mike Mott. His 9.7 on the horse salvaged the event for the Wolverines and he added solid efforts on three of the next four events. The Wolverines resurgence translated to quality scores in the final four events - still rings (46.80), vault (45.45), parallel bars (45.90), and horizontal bars (46.30). 0 0 01 ELIZABETH LIPPMAN/Daily Women gymnasts take first place at Keen Wolverine Debbie Geiger performs her floor exercise as Michigan defeated Oklahoma, Western Michigan and Ball Sate at home Friday. *I FAST, PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.
