Monday, the University Hillel Foundation begins its 14th Annual Conference on the Holocaust. "The purpose of the conference is to raise awareness so that people never forget what happened and we can learn from the things that have taken place in the past," said Carole May, program assistant at Hillel. The program consists of a week of activities - held at Hillel and other locations around campus - designed to educate students while commemorating the Holocaust. Solomon Perel will give the Michael Bernstein Memorial Lecture. Perel's life as a young Polish Jew during the Holocaust is the basis of the Golden Globe Award-winning film, "Europa, Europa." Students will read and remember the names of people killed in the Holocaust in the annual 24-hour vigil on the Diag, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Monday. A traveling Jewish theatre troupe will present a play that deals with On the Diag "A Memorial of Names" Individuals will read names of those who perished in the Holocaust. Traditional dances performed at E. Quad during a late-night game of snow Perel to highlight annual Holocaust memorial forum by Peter Matthews Daily Staff Reporter While the Nectarine crowd grooved to yesterday's Eurobeat Night, about 30 East Quad students chilled to American beats. "An Evening of Dance" was pre- sented in the residence hall's South Cafeteria. The program consisted of dances from three American cultures - each was represented by a differ- ent campus-based group. "Los Hijos de Atzlan," the first troupe, performed five traditional Mexican dances. "Los Hijos" was organized in 1973 "to educate other people to Mexican folk dancing and the his- tory behind our distinct regional dances," said Andrew Perez, a troupe member of 10 years. Perez said the dances get "in your blood" and described them as "very intricate and aerobic." The women's outfits were differ- ent colors and accentuated with mot- ley ribbons. Props used in the dances included machetes and a silver gilt sombrero. Another dance troupe, "Los Jibar- itos," performed Puerto Rican mod- ern dances. The fast pace and gyrat- ing hips of their dances elicited comments such as, "Work it baby!" from spectators. Luis Laboy, an LSA sophomore who is Puerto Rican but was raised in the United States, said, "The thing I'm most proud of is our music in- corporates the African, Spanish and Indian traditions." In order to emphasize the catchi- ness of its feverish dance music, the troupe played a song .in Spanish recorded by a Japanese band. Members of the "Native Ameri- can Dancers" donned ornate cos- tumes. Susan Hill, an LSA senior, wore a "jingle dress" with bells ev- erywhere but on her fingers and toes - an outfit worn during Ojibwa healing ceremonies. "Our dances are not really about performance," Hill said. "They are about the celebration of life." Terry Samuels, an LSA senior of Odawa ancestry, twirled and stomped as he performed the "grass dance" on the cafeteria's hard floor. Hassle-free renting!
