In light of the recent Diag policy developments, this picture from the Daily in 1983 takes on even greater
significance. Here, a friendly neighborhood police officer "gently" escorts two gentlemen away from the Diag
for playing "music that disrupted classes." At the time, University Security told musicians that they could only
play from 12 p.m.-l p.m. on any day, and only if they had a permit (I wouldn't bet my life on getting one,
though). Give us a break! The last time I had a class anywhere near the Diag, music was a cool distraction, not
the public nuisance that U officials make it out to be. The choice is quite simple really - do you want to hear
cool young local musicians jamming away, or those boring lectures from stuffy profs who have been doing
this sort of thing just way too long? We thought so.
