Two members of the Society for Creative Anachronism participate in a medieval re-enactment at an event last weekend. Medieval group unites ladies, lords, in re-enactment by Lisa Dines Some say chivalryis dead, butmem- bers of the Society for Creative Anach- ronism (SCA) would beg to differ. SCA is a campus group that at- tempts to preserve medieval traditions. Members choose a persona from the middle ages - between 500 and 1600 A.D. - and embody that character. "It is a lot of fun to become a slightly different version of yourself. Some be- come more barbarian, others are more courtly, elegant or flirtatious," said Danielle McEvoy, a Ypsilanti resident. Cynnabar, the campus chapter of SCA, is just a small "shire" of the inter- national organization. Although Cynnabar is a student group, it. includes Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor residents. Cynnabar holds weekly meetings and workshops to introduce medieval subjects including fighting, archery, embroidery, dancing and sewing. The University's shire also travels to events throughout the Midwest. A typical event, which may cost $12-$15 perperson, includes merchants, feasting, fighting, dancing, and a royal court. "Events recreate the pageantry, color and flavor of the middle ages ... as well as the courtesy and the chivalry," McEvoy said. Everyone at the events must be -dressed in garb. While it can become quite elaborate, garb basics include aT- tunic and boots for men and a long dress belted at the waist for women. Cloaks, and head coverings are common garb for both sexes. "Modesty was big in the middle ages," said Jeff Skevington, prince of the Middle Kingdom and Ann Arbor resident. Fighting, a major event attraction, can take place with a variety of weapons - most commonly a sword and shield. The instruments are padded for safety, and the competitors wear armor for protection as well as authenticity. When a competitor is hit in the arm or leg, that body part may no longer be used. A blow to the torso or head is considered a kill. Paul Lowe, an Engineering senior who has been "fighting" for four years, said he originally joined the SCA bey cause he enjoys this aspect, of the soci- ety. He said, "Everyone says, 'Why would you want to go out there and let someone hit you in the head with a stick?' It is a lotmore fun than it looks." Medieval arts and science demon- strations and wandering merchants also add flavor to the events. "You can buy anything from armor to swords and daggers to all sorts of jewelry, fabric, sewing and weavings," said Maryann Guariento, an Engineer- ing senior. After the fighting, the royalty con- ducts court and the event comes to a close with a feast and medieval danc- ing. "The feastlasts generally about two hours and has six to eight removes or courses," she said. The group tries to maintain a strict observance of the customs of the time period that are represented by partici- pants. "We try to be as historically accurate as possible. If you want to register (a persona with the society) then you must be able to document it," Guariento said. Every year SCA members fromn across the United States gather in Penn- sylvania for the Pennsic War. The event, designed to totally immerse members in medieval life, had an attendance of nearly 8,000 people last year. "The war consists of six melees, or battles, with each king leading an army of approximately 1,000 fighters," Skevington said. "It is very physically demanding. You are out in the hot sun for two to three hours while wearing annor Members said the SCA tries to cre- ate an open, inclusive environment at both the weekly events and at Pennsic. Most student members said they joined the group because of the friendly atmo- sphere. "One of the nicest things about the society is that you can take things for granted ... like chivalry, honesty and friendliness," McEvoy said. (AP)- Legisla- tion that would slash property taxes but raise the state income tax cleared a House panel yesterday over objections that it's a tax shift, not a tax cut. Rep. Greg Kaza(R-Rochester Hills), an outspoken opponentof the plan, said, "Raising the income tax and the sales tax would put the greatest burden on the poor and people living on fixed in- comes. There's no such thing as a neu- tral tax." The 10-bill package sailed through the House Taxation Committee. It now goes to the full House. Gov. John Engler will veto the legis- lation if it clears the House and Senate with the income tax increase intact, said Jeff McAlvey, Engler's legislative liai- son. "The governor won't sign an in- come tax bill," he said. The legislation would cut local school operating taxes by 50 percent. In 1994, voters would have the op- tion of increasing the state sales tax from 4 nercent to 6 nercent. That would relief plan to cut school operating taxes by 20 percent and save the average homeowner $1,046 over the next four years. The governor's plan cleared the Republican-run Senate last month, but it's still stuck before the HouseTaxation Committee. Democrats and some Re- publicans there say they don't like it because it doesn't tackle the school finance problem. "Citizens recognize we can't deal with property tax reform and school finance reform separately," said Rep. Lynn Jondahl (D-Okemos), co-chair of the tax panel. The Michigan Education Associa- tion (MEA) supports the legislation and "will lobby intensely" to make it palat- able to the governor, MEA lobbyist Al Short said. He predicted the bills will end up in a House-Senate conference committee, where both chambers would be able to hammer out a compromise. Short said he will push to get the legislation signed into law by May 1, when summer tax bills are mailed to 30 SUMMER JOBS AVAIL. Resort near Lake Michigan. June 5-Labor Day.
