Michigan assistant coach Mike McGuire said it was a good tuneup for the Big Tens. "We got some good things done today," McGuire said. "I thought (Chris) Szabo was outstanding. Richell (Webb) and Laura (Jerman) had some great races. This very well may be the best team Michigan has taken to the Championships. Now we just have to make sure that we perform on those two days." The NCAA creates two standards for each event: an automatic time, which guarantees a berth in the NCAAs, and a provisional time. A select number of those who make the provisional standard roound out the NCAA field. Szabo gunned for the provisional time in the 3000 meters. She needed to hit the mark of 9:38.00 in order to hit the provisional standard. With the pacing help of former Michigan standout Mindy Schmidt, Szabo placed second with the time of 9:35.39, putting her 18th on the provisional list. "I felt pretty relaxed," Szabo said. "We planned on having Mindy help with the pace, and it paid off. I still have next weekend to improve my position." Kelly Chard also ran in the 3000 and placed third in 9:48.30. Jerman scored a trifecta by taking a first, second, and third. Jerman captured third in the long jump with a distance of 17' 9 1/4," ran a per- sonal best of 8.03 in the 55-meter hurdles, which was good for second, and completed the day by winning the 200 in 25.97. Webb placed first both in the 400 and in the 55. Tearza Johnson also performed well, placing third in the 400 and second in the 55. The 800 went down to the wire. Karen Harvey took second with the time of 2:11.13. Three Michigan runners kicked it out for an exciting race for third. Molly McClimon crossed the finish line in the time of 2:12.22, followed by Jessica Kluge in 2:12.56, and Courtney Babcock in 2:12.84. A Added training benefits men runners I I by Tonya Broad Daily Sports Writer The men's track and field team participated in two separate track meets over spring break while preparing for the Big Ten Champi- onships. Michigan ran at the Eastern Michigan Classic held at Eastern Michigan University and the Silver- ston Invitational held here in Ann Arbor. The team used the meets to fine tune its athletes for the confer- ence meet. The Wolverines switched the lineup at EMU to overtrain some athletes while undertraining others. Viewing the results from the Silver- ston Invitational meet, this move proved beneficial. Michigan won or placed high in most events. The highlights of the afternoon were the phenomenal freshman per- formances. Jon Royce, after strug- EfII11 iNIA~ STYLISTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN Liberty off State 668-9329 gling most of the season, finally got his steps together to win the high jump (7'1 1/2"). Royce has been try- ing to solidify his approach to be- come a more consistent jumper. "He jumped well and I'm glad to see it," Michigan coach Jack Harvey said. "He'd had problems and it's a good time to be back on top of things." Scott MacDonald posted another highlight as he sprinted to a win in the mile run with the din of the crowd driving him home. MacDon- ald eclipsed the field running a 4:02.03 mile. While the time was outstanding, it does not automati- cally qualify MacDonald for the NCAA meet. Other standouts included Toby VanPelt, who won the pole vault by almost a foot; Todd Burnham, who won the 400 meter (48.89 seconds) and Nick Karfunta who won the 600 meter run (1:20.8). 0 0 I r the.kflOW could y: *answer questions and provide referral information about the U? *gather data from U offices and organizations? *write summaries of the U's services, offices, and facilities? ebe organized and friendly, through finals?? then you have what it takes to be an Information Assistant at the Campus Information Centers.
