Fine Fine, who has lectured to approx- imately 25,000 students while at the University, said winning the award was a pleasant surprise. Although he has won many awards during his ca- reer, he said, "This is the only one that has come from the students - that makes it very special." Fine's students said they appre- ciate that he is easy to reach and happy to see them. Fine holds five scheduled office hours a week. RC junior Michele Young said, "I go in and visit him weekly. You don't just go in there for work. He encourages old students to keep coming in to meet with him ... He really seems to me to be the most accessible professor in this campus." But Fine said dealing with stu- dents directly is part of his job. "I pride myself on being available to students," he said. "I feel that being accessible to students in large classes breaks down the anonymity in the class." 11.p . VJ w a -G ra' r ---* a1V should never tell an anecdote just because it's funny," he said. "It should always relate to some point you're trying to make. You don't' teach to get laughs. It does help stu- dents to remember people." Students cited Fine's lecture style as one of the primary reasons they think he deserves the Golden Apple. "He is definitely interesting. The lectures were amazing. I know people who would sneak into his lectures just to hear them," said LSA, junior Brian Kalt. LSA senior Sarah Richelew con- curred. "The lecture style itself is pretty old-school. He throws out a lot of information. That's the one thing I regret. I can't appreciate both' him and the material while I'm sit- ting there. He does tell little stories, and those are very engaging. They show his first hand experience with the material," she said. Bil Kerrigan, who has been a teaching assistant for Fine for seven. semesters, said he thinks Fine'.& commitment to undergraduate stu dents is apparent. "I think one of the reasons his lectures are so popular is that he really cares about the under- graduates, and I think the under- graduates know that." Richelew agreed, "He's a very; caring person and he's also an' inspiring professor. That's what I think (the Golden Apple) award is' for, to recognize someone with such, attributes." Regarding his future at the' University, Fine said, "I will con- tinue teaching as long as I feel I can give 110 percent in teaching and in research both. I enjoy it and it seems to be going well. I get a big kick out of my teaching, my research and being with students." " A.. N N A F1 R 0 R f - 1 a the new LIMITED EDITION live album by . 7 Novo 3 ''Wa 0 . ' Want a0job n Advertising?
