THE MORTAR- BOARD HONOR SOCIETY: has dedicated itself to the pursuit of scholarship and service at America's finest Universities, is now accepting applications for induction. 1918 lgg3 by Shara Moskowitz Neon fliers posted in Angell Hall, local restaurants, and kiosks in the Diag all read: "Jamaica $449. Cancun $439. Acapulco $499." While these prices include airfare, seven days in the sun, a decent hotel and transportation, the trips may not be as much of a bargain as they appear. These vacation packages are run by student organizers who publicize, ad- vertise, and encourage others to sign-up for the trips. For their efforts, the coordinators receive "a free trip," said LSA senior Jen Leland, who is organizing a trip to Janaica. The students are expected to con- tinue organizing while on vacation. However, one student said these repre- sentatives are not always available. "When we needed to find out where and what time the van would bring us to the airport, there was no student repre- sentative to be found. We ended up paying an additional $40 for cab fare," said Jackie Klein, who went on a stu- dent-run trip last year. "I did see the student representative once, ... on the airplane flying back to Michigan." Bats end winter hibernation early, roam around campus by James Cho Daily Staff Reporter Last weekend, students were fright- ened by wayward bats lost in University buildings in two separate incidents. The first incident occurred at Stockwell Residence Hall. "There was a 3-inch brown bathang- ing on the screen on the first floor laun- dry room late Friday night," said Kathy Barton, a resident advisor at Stockwell and School of Education junior. Barton said she called the Univer- sity Department of Public Safety (DPS) but after waiting 20 minutes, knocked it down herself with a pool stick. When a security guard from Mosher-Jordan Residence Hall arrived, they dropped the bat out the window. Another bat startled students at the Law Quad Reading Room last Saturday night. Early in the afternoon students spotted the bat on the wall, but nothing was done until one student found it on the ground below a table. "It was a nice study break. It was lying on the ground making squeaking noises," said Andy Organski, an LSA sophomore who was sitting nearby. Associate Zoology Prof. Philip Meyers said bats hibernate in the win- ter, but when the weather warms up, "they wake up to see what's going on." Dale Hodgson, pest management specialist for the Department of Occu- pational Safety and Environmental Health said people should not worry about seeing bats around campus. "If you see a bat on the ground, it's probably physically sick. Don't touch it because it will bite or scratch you," Hodgson warned. But batdroppings, calledguano, can be dangerous. "Histoplasmosis infection is caused by inhaling a fungus found in soil con- taminated with bird and bat droppings," Hodgson said. Dan Mowakowski, the Spring Break representative at Regency Travel Agency described some other hidden costs of student-run travel. "(The) low-balling price technique is common," Mowakowski said. "The packages run by students are one time, one departure deals." LSA senior Lisa Schnieder said her vacation became much more expen- sive than she had anticipated. "I thought I was getting a great deal on my trip to Jamaica for $449, until the late fee, the transportation fee and tax were tacked on to the original price. This trip has cost me $620," she said. Although Mowakowski hesitated to compare travel agency trips with stu- dent-run packages, he did mention the word "disaster" - students arriving without a hotel, being left at the gate at the airport and flying with nondescript airlines. But despite all of the problems, stu- dents said they do have fun on these vacations. "Iwould neversay mytriptoMexico was smooth, but a smooth trip would not have been half as much fun," LSA senior Melanie Hatz said.
