Women's Swimming & Diving vs. Notre Dame Tomorrow, 7 p.m. Canham Natatorium SPORIS Men's Basketball vs. Purdue Sunday, 12:45 p.m. (CBS) Crisler Arena Men's volleyball hosts club tourney by Jeremy Strachan This weekend Graceland will in- vade Michigan. No, there has not been. another Elvis sighting at the Burger King in Kalamazoo. The Michigan men's volleyball team (3-4 overall) will host a thirty team tournament at the Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) Saturday. First round matches begin at 9:00 a.m. The invite list includes Graceland College which finished second at the Club Volleyball Nationals last year, and defeated Michigan in the finals here a year ago. Also competing will be pow- erhouses Michigan State and Notre Dame. Two of Michigan's losses this year were to these teams. The tournament format splits the teams into six pools. Round robin play occurs in each pool. Matches are the best two out of three games and the two teams with the top records in each pool advance to the second round. Michigan is seeded second in its pool. The twelve teams remaining will try to spike their way to the finals in single elimination play. Michigan's Chad Stielstra said he thinks the Wolverines will not have much trouble making it to the final dozen. "I think we'll at least make it to the quarterfinals," Stielstrasaid. "ltdepends on who we draw, and if we can adjust our game according to our plan. We usually fare well here in front of our home crowd." The Wolverines added three new players to the roster last week. Michi- gan coach Pam Griffin said he hopes the additions and her new defensive scheme help. 'We adjusted our defensive setup from our traditional defense to a current defense we've seen other teams use," Griffin said. "The new players will be needed for substitutions. It is a long day.'' Wrestlers prepare for first road dual by Paul Barger Daily Sports Writer The Michigan wrestling team was getting used to staying at home every weekend, but the Wolverines are being told to get out a bit more. The squad takes to the road tonight as it heads to West Lafayette to face Purdue. This mid-week dual meet will be followed by a Saturday stop in Illi- nois for a meet against the Illini and Indiana. The road warriors will con- tinue their wandering ways as they travel to Columbus a week from Saturday to face Ohio State. The month of February will be the antithesis of January for the Wolverines as they will only wrestle once in the friendly confines of Cliff Keen Arena. Last month the only away meet was, ironically enough, the Cliff Keen Team Duals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Purdue should provide a stiff test for Michigan, especially in three weight classes. At 118 lbs, Gabe Zirkelbach is ranked 6th nationally, Tim Roahrig (158 lbs) is ranked 9th and Aaron Moran(167 lbs) is ranked 12th. Roahrig will be tremendous chal- lenge forMichigan's Sean Bormet, who is ranked third in the nation. Bormethas compiled a record of 22-3 (10 pins). "At 158 there will be a really good match," Purdue coach Jessie Reyes said. "They've wrestled each other plenty of times and it should be an interesting match." Purdue was expected to be in the lower echelon of the Big Ten but has surprised many. The Boilermakers had a legitimate chance of beating Ohio State but came up short, 23-15. 'We've done really well," Reyes said. "We lost seven starters. No one expected us to do anything." This all comes from a first year coach who had the unenviable task of taking over after a very successful sea- son in West Lafayette. Last year's team finished 12-6-1 with a 12th place show- ing at the NCAA Championships. "Our upperclassmen have really improved and the freshmen have helped a lot," Reyes said. With only one month of preparation left before the Big Ten Championships, both teams are looking to improve. The Wolverines will look to keep momen- tum after Sunday afternoon's furious comeback against Northwestern. Al- though the clubcame away with a22-19 victory, the match cautioned the Wol- verines against letting down their guard while wrestling in the highly competi- tive Big Ten. "As far as the Big Ten is concerned, the top five teams in the conference could all be in the top ten in the coun- try." Michigan coach Dale Bahr said. "The Big Ten is a super-conference." The Michigan wrestlers will take on a tough Purdue squad tonight in the first of three consecutive road meets. 'M' blers head to Bronco countr By Scott Burton Daily Sports Writer Sometimes, winning isn't every- thing. Take for instance the case of the Michigan men'sgymnastics team. Sure, the 0-3 Wolverines would like to win this Saturday's meet at Western Michi- gan. But the main focus of the meet for the squad is to continue improving its scores in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA regionals. 'We're looking at this meet at two different levels," Michigan coach Bob Dardin said. "We're looking at a win. Western Michigan is pushing the 260's, while we're going to push for the mid 270's. "But also there are some areas that we'll be looking to improve in (this weekend). One is pommel horse. We need to cover that event with more consistency. It seems rings is a weak event as well. We're going to try to bolster those scores." Besides pommel horse and rings, there are other areas Dardin would like to see his team improve in. While his top five performers in each event have been hitting 80% of their routines - the team's goal- the number six slot has been a trouble spot. 'We've had problems at six. We're only hitting 63%," Dardin said. "We need to get more individual support at six and get more consistent." Stepping up in such areas is the next step to Michigan's already steady im- provement from the beginning of the season. Posting a 256 in their season opener with Minnesota, the Wolverines have improved each week since then, including last week's 270.3 against Illinois. 'We're pointing in the direction of the (NCAA) regionals.' - Bob Darden, 'M' gymnastics coach 'We're hoping to continue to im- prove to the upper 270's to lower280's," Dardin said. "We're pointing in the direction of the (NCAA) regionals." The Wolverines will continue to be without the services of injured gym- nasts Brian Winkler and Royce Toni. They are back in training but won't be worked into the line-up until March. Also absent for this weekend's com- petition will be Seth King (broken ankle) and Ben Verrall (shoulder injury). Dental School Studly Individuals with com- plaints of oral malodor (bad breath) are invited to participate in a clinical study. Participants will receive dental examina- tion, malodor evaluation, advice and possible treat- ment.
