"When they cut it to three, it. looked as if we were helter-skelter on offense and we were trying to do things too quickly," Fisher said. "When things don't go right on offense, sometimes you don't play well on defense," Fisher said. "So we talked about defending them better, first, and then we told them to look inside." His strategy paid off as Michigan's big men - Chris Webber and Juwan Howard - scored four points in a 7-0 run which extended the lead back to 10, all but. sealing the Spartans' fate. " I thought if we ever got ahead," Michigan State coach Jud Ileathcote said, "maybe we could win. But we didn't do that." Webber led all scorers with 22 points, while Howard contributed 16 of his own and grabbed 13 re- bounds. Michigan shut down the Spartans' leading scorer, Shawn Respert, holding him to only 7 points - 13 under his average - on 2- for-14 shooting. "They're pretty talented," Respert said. "I don't think many teams can check me like that. "We're an inside-outside team, and for it to work the outside shots need to fall. That just didn't happen today." The inside part of the Spartan game also had a sub-par perfor- mance. The Spartans were outre- bounded, 44-37, and were ineffec- tive in stopping Webber and Ioward in the paint. "We knew Pep(lowski) and Miller would have to neutralize (Michigan's) inside gave, and they were nowhere to be found," IHeathcote said. "(Kris) Weshinskey and Respert were not hitting the three pointers, and the best laid plan did not happen." *FULL COURT PRESS-- err MICHIGAN (73) FGO Mn. M-A UAOT P. Losing not a problem for Jud wanna-bes by Andy De Korte Daily Basketball Writer EAST LANSING - Did you ever have a crazy uncle? I do not mean crazy like a fox, mind you. More along the lines of the uncle who walked around your backyard in his underwear talking to plants. A man like that was spotted at the Breslin Center last night. In the main attraction, Michigan went into the Breslin Center and beat the Michigan State basketball team, 73-69, in unspectacular fashion. Despit4 being a tightly-contested game, the fact that Michigan never trailed caused the eyes to wander around the new-fangled fieldhouse. Invariably, though, they ended up focused on the balding man in the green jacket - MSU coach Jud Heathcote. Whether Jud was beating his chest like a gorilla or pounding his fist into his head, he was always entertaining. The Spartan fans take their cue from him as well. His popularity on cam- pus has spawned a fan club - the Jud Club - whose members don toupees with thin white cotton strands and the trademark green sportcoat. But Jud is just the seed from which madcap Spartan antics blossom. In stark contrast to the mild Crisler fans, the Spartan faithful drowned its op-s ponent in a constant state of noise. And keep in mind the Spartans never led. The fans had a field day harassing the Fab Five, who made their return as a starting unit last night. Apparently fun, not ingenuity, is the focus in East Lansing. While the pom-pon crew was double the size of Michigan's, and the 15-member dance team thrust to AC /DC's "Shook me all Night Long," there were subtle dif- ferences indicative of the meager MSU intellect. In a cheer similar to one found in Ann Arbor, the MSU cheerleaders _4r scrambled around on the Breslin Center floor, spelling out "M-S-U" instead of the entire words. Presumably, Rob Pelinka might say, to minimize the risk of a spelling error. "I think sometimes people say that the students at Michigan State went there because they didn't get into Michigan," he said prior to the game. "(Michigan is) a better school academically and I think they have a little re- MICHIGAN STATE (69) FO FT Rob. Min. One instance of Spartan creativity that towered above the Crisler Crazies was the sign-making capability. The evening's top marks went to a foursome dressed as drag queens. In a response to Juwan Howard's game-ending hand gesture to the Breslin faithful last season, the students' sign retorted, "Hey Juwan, I'nm pregnant." Luckily for Michigan coach Steve Fisher, it was his team that was having all the fun on the court. A barrage of Chris Webber dunks ended the last Spartan run and their last legitimate shot at victory. Despite shooting 16-for- 26 from the charity stripe, Fisher and his crew got the last laugh in that facet as well, as the Spartans shot a woeful 10-for-23.
