He scored two goals and added three assists in the Wolverines' 8-1 victory over Illinois-Chicago Friday, and notched three more assists in Saturday's 11-1 drubbing of Michigan State. BACKGROUND: One of the toughest players in college hockey, Stewart combines physical play with his scoring knack. Stewart is tied for the team-lead in points with 38, six more than his previous best of 32, established his freshman year. Last season, he amassed 28 points, and played in all 44 games for Michigan. Stewart was a third- round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 1990 NHL Draft. Most teams do not like to play on the road. The Michigan men's swimming and diving team may not like it, but after almost two months of away meets they sure have gotten used to it. The Wolverines come home now after two weekend victories in the state of Indiana. Friday night, Michigan (4-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) topped Purdue, 127.5-107.5. Sat- urday, the Wolverines traveled down the road to Bloomington to beat Indiana, 180-120. The story of the weekend though was the shuffling of the Michigan lineup. Several swimmers competed in events that they normally do not swim. "This was the first weekend that we had a chance to take a break from the usual events," Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek said. "We're lucky to be able to win these dual meets without really concentrating." Michigan's depth was simply too much for Indiana and Purdue. "We have such a strong team this year," senior tri-captain Steve Dut- tenhofer said. "I'm doing the same times as I did last year and I'm a lot lower as far as team standings go." Several swimmers had great showings for Michigan, but the highlight of the weekend came Fri- day night in West Lafayette. Soph- omore Thomas Blake, in a return to his home town, broke the Lambert pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:25.71. "It felt pretty good," Blake said. "It was real exciting to do because I had a lot of friends in the stands." "It's his home town, so he needed to show off a little to the home crowd," Urbanchek said. Also swimming well for Mich- igan was senior Brian Gunn. Sat- urday in Bloomington, Gunn took both the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Junior Rodney VanTassel also swam well winning the 200 freestyle at Purdue and finishing second in two events at Indiana. Senior Eric Wunderlich won two events over the weekend as well. His 56.62 time in the 100 breaststroke qualified him for an NCAA provisional spot. This means Wunderlich, who Urbanchek said should formally qualify soon, is now only qualified for the NCAA Championships if enough swimmers do not better his time. The Michigan divers also did well over the weekend. Against the Boilermakers, the Wolverines took first through third in both the one- meter and three-meter springboard events, but against the Hoosiers, Michigan could take only one of the events. "At Purdue, we dove pretty well," senior Brad Lambert said. "There wasn't much competition for us. At Indiana, we dove really well in the one-meter, but not as well in the three-meter." Michigan now looks forward to another meet on the road. However, this time the Wolverines will stay in the state of Michigan, traveling to Michigan State Friday. After losing to the Dallas Cowboys yesterday, the Buffalo Bills have now lost in all three of their Super Bowl appearances. The Bills were losers in Super Bowls XXV and XXVI as well. The other six teams winless in the Super Bowl are the Cincinnati Bengals, who lost twice (XVI, XXIII) the Denver Broncos who lost Super Bowls XII, XXI, XXII, and XXIV; the Los Angeles Rams who lost Super Bowl XIV; the Minnesota Vikings who lost four times (IV, VIll, IX, XI); the New England Patriots who lost in Super Bowl XX; and the Philadelphia Eagles who lost in Super Bowl XV. i DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS SELF-SERVE COPIES INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM WANTED!!!
