The Michigan Daily We'vegoftit all NEWS " SPORTS * ARTS * PHOTO * OPINION 9iU(1NKVEWS Cowboys' return to glory is inevitable: Dallas, 114-8 by Bob Abramson Daily Sports Writer Before the illustrious Super Bowl, before the everlasting pre- game show, and even before the in- comparable Bud Bowl V, the 12th- ranked Michigan wrestling team (1- 2 Big Ten, 7-3 overall) will try to put on its own form of entertainment against Northwestern (3-1-1, 5-3-1) Sunday. The Wolverines are back on track after winning four out of its last six matches and placing fifth at the Cliff Keen National Dual Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska last weekend. Michigan came through with a cou- ple of surprising victories, defeating fourth-ranked Iowa State 22-15 and downing Big Ten foe and No. 11 Ohio State, 22-14. "After we lost to Penn State two weeks ago, the team was a little dis- appointed that it didn't perform bet- ter and seemed a little apprehensive heading into Nationals," Coach Dale Bahr said. "But we ended up win- ning four out of six matches and I'm real pleased with our progress so far. "My biggest concern heading into this weekend is that we're still kind of tired. When you wrestle six big dual meets in two days, it takes a lot out of you." The Wildcats roll into Ann Arbor on the heels of a stunning 18-18 tie with sixth-ranked Minnesota. Al- though none of the Wildcats' wrest- lers are ranked nationally, they may be the sleeper team in the Big Ten. "In this conference, anybody can beat anybody so you have to be ready every week," Northwestern coach Tim Cysewski said. "I think if we get the early lead and hold on to it, then we have a chance of winning this match." The Wildcats' strength comes from their lower weight classes, starting at 118 pounds where Jeff Mirabella has compiled an 18-6 record and a sixth-place finish at the Northern Open. At 126 pounds, Ted Yeager has recorded seven falls this year and finished fourth at the Midland Championships. Paul Andreotti, coming back from a shoulder injury, defeated third-ranked Damon Johnson of Minnesota at 142 pounds last week. Even though Northwestern's strength may lie at the lower weight classes, a key match-up will come at 177 pounds, where Michigan's 10th- ranked Lanny Green will battle the Wildcats' Roger Williams. Green defeated national champion Kevin Randleman of Ohio State 4-3 last week, while Williams lost to Ran- dleman two weeks ago in the last twenty-six seconds of the third period. "Green and Williams could turn the tables of the match right there," Cysewski said. "If Green wins, it may give them the edge going into 190 and the heavyweight division." Coach Bahr feels that the Wolverines match-up well with Northwestern. "Their first four kids are real tough," Bahr said. "But where they are strong, we are strong. At 150 and 158, they are not as strong, so maybe we can put some extra points on the board." Northwestern will be without one of its top wrestlers, Rohan Gardner. Gardner was eighth in the country at 167 pounds and placed third in the Ohio Open before he suffered a sea- son-ending knee injury. There will be changes for Mich- igan, too. Brian Perkins will start in place of Matt Stout at 118, while Chad Biggert replaces Kevin Williams at 167. by Michael Rosenberg Daily Sports Writer I'm not going to sit here and make fun of the city of Buffalo end- lessly. It's not that I don't want to. I can't. My mom's from Buffalo. (Don't laugh. At least she got out.) Okay. Maybe that's a slight ex- aggeration. Maybe the Cowboys aren't that good. It doesn't matter. They're playing the Bills. The Bills, you might recall, hail from the AFC. AFC teams generally head into the Super Bowl scoring more than Madonna, but in the big game the offense never shows up. Defense? Are you kidding me? The Bills play defense like Iraq. They couldn't stop a nose from run- ning. The Cowboys will run roughshod over the Bills. (Note: I don't know exactly what "running roughshod" means, but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere before.) Dallas, on the other hand, had the best defense in the league this sea- son. They won every game they had to. They'll be ready. Of course, the Bills do have more experience. After all, when was the last time Troy Aikman was inter- cepted three times in the Super Bowl? At least if it comes down to a field goal in the final seconds, we know who's been there before. Some people say that the Bills really showed something in their comeback against the Houston Oil- ers. And they did. They showed that the Oilers play even worse defense than they do. Then there is the argument that the Bills will win because they are going to come together and give ev- erything they have to avenge the previous losses. Yeah, right. The last time the Bills were united, so was the Soviet Union. Buffalo's best player, Thurman Thomas, lost his helmet at last year's Super Bowl. Contrary to published reports, his head was not in it. Safran Daily Sports Writer Last year at about this same time I sat in front of a computer and pre- dicted that the Buffalo Bills would defeat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI. The result was a blowout victory for the Skins and a bruised ego for yours truly. Who knew Thurman Thomas would for- get where he left his helmet. The Bills have returned to the "Big Game" to face the upstart Dallas Cowboys, and again, I am giving the nod to Buffalo. The Bills do not wish to become the first team in league history to lose three consecutive Super Bowls. For the Bills, the game simply comes down to one thing - pride. full-line record store presents the new JESUS JONES Jim Kelly and Bruce Smith are among the highest paid at their re- spective positions and have been named to numerous all-pro teams. However in the NFL, the ring is the thing. Then the little thing called mo- mentum comes into play. Did the Cowboys win two games, convinc- ingly, on the road in two incredibly hostile environments, like the Bills did? No. Buffalo also played a wild- card game against Houston that you may have seen. Yes, they won a game after being down 32 points in the second half. The greatest comeback in the history of the NFL with a backup quarter- back leading the way. The defense has starred since the second half against Houston. Pitts- burgh managed 250 total yards. Miami? Please. Smith and Darrell Talley were so close to Dan Marino they had the warning label on the back of his helmet memorized by halftime. Buffalo can come up with that big play any time because of Thomas, the best all-around running back in the league. He led the NFL in all-purpose yards for the fourth year in a row. Who's record did he break? Jim Brown's. Dallas fans can have Emmitt Smith. I know he led the NFL in rushing this season, but no team with the NFL's leading rusher has ever won the Super Bowl?
