The Michigan Daily - Sports Wednesday-- January 6, 1993 - Page 7 Penalties *plague 'M' icers in 2-2 tie by Tim Rardin Daily Hockey Writer For the second-ranked Michigan hockey team, Saturday's 7-1 blow- out of Alberta was as easy as Sun- day's 2-2 overtime tie was ugly. The two teams combined for 24 penalties in the second game, with Michigan contributing 13 to the cause. Five of those infractions oc- curred in the second period, as the Wolverines played shorthanded for exactly half of the 20-minute stanza. That factor did not so much help 9 Alberta's offense. - the Golden Bears failed to convert on any of their eight power-play opportunities -as it hurt Michigan's. "Our power play wasn't very ef- fective. They really stacked up on the blue line," Alberta coach Bill Moores said. "Our penalty killers did a good job. They had to," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "There were too many penalties. It's hard to get a flow going with that many penal- ties." Indeed, after Wolverine left wing Dan Stiver notched his ninth goal of the season on a power play 15:09 into the first period, Michigan had trouble mustering much of anything. Alberta responded in the second with each of its two goals, both coiming when the Wolverines did not have someone in the penalty box, and both coming against Michigan goaltender Chris Gordon, who started for the first time this season. "We got off on the wrong foot tonight," Michigan captain David Harlock said after Sunday's game. "We weren't doing the little things like we did last night." Indeed, Michigan's stymied of- fense Sunday was anything but with seven goals the night before. Alberta jumped out to an early lead at 2:27 into the game as Barcley Pearce capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play, and for about ten minutes, it ap- peared as if the Wolverines had a game on their hands. But Cain Stewart's unassisted goal at the 11:06 mark of the first period would be the beginning of the Golden Bears' end. Five Wolverines would score in all, with Stewart and Stiver notching two goals apiece. Michigan is now 13-3-3 on the season, after sweeping Kent State Dec. 11-12. Blue icers take fifth straight GLI crown by Matthew Rennie Daily Sports Writer, DETROIT - It's a Wonderful Life. Miracle on 34th Street. The Grinch that Stole Christmas. Michigan Wins the Great Lakes Invitational. Yes, that last item does qualify as another holiday rerun. For a record- tying fifth consecutive year, the Michigan hockey team came away from Joe Louis Arena with the GLI championship. Michigan Tech won five straight titles from 1976-80. The Wolverines won this one in style, depending on your definition of style. Michigan donned maize jer- seys for the championship game, an 8-3 victory over Northern Michigan. Michigan took control of the game in the first 6:22, scoring four goals on just seven shots before Michigan goalie Steve Shields had made his first save. Cam Stewart scored two of the four goals and was named tournament MVP for his three-goal, two-assist perfonnance. The Wolverines took the 4-0 lead inte the first intermission and coasted to victory, leaving little to hold the fans' interest besides the Michigan uniforms. The Wolverines have worn maize before - in a 1980 game against Notre Dane. Michigan equipment manager Ian Hume pushed for the maize jerseys over the summer, and coach Red Berenson finally consented, reserving them only for special occasions. "Hopefully, they'll have a posi- tive psychological effect," Berenson said. "They'll come out again from time to time. We'll try to work them into our system." The final did not offer near the drama of the team's last clash, a 7-6 come-from-behind Michigan win in last season's NCAA quarterfinals. "I think there's a difference in the green team, but not the gold team," Wildcat coach Rick Comley said. "It seems so easy for them. They're tough. They're cocky. They're good." Stewart was joined on the all- tournament team by Shields, junior center Brian Wiseman, and rookie de- fenseman Steven Halko. The Wolverines had a tougher time beating the other Upper Peninsula team in the tournament, Michigan Tech, in the semifinal. Michigan overcame a 1-0 first-period deficit to scratch out a 5-3 triumph and a ticket to the final. "In past years, winning this tour- nament has inspired us to play well during the second half of the sea- son," Berenson said. "I hope it will have the sane effect this year." Defenseman Al Sinclair lays a big check on a Northern Michigan player, enabling fellow Wolverine Mike Stone to keep control of the puck. Michigan defeated the Wildcats to capture its fifth consecutive GLI championship. STEVENS Continued from page 6 encouragement to her teamnates as they defeated Bucknell for their first victory of the season. "Tannisha's presence on the bench was a big motivational factor for the team," Michigan coach Trish Roberts said. "She showed tremen- dous enthusiasm on the sidelines, and the team wanted to win. "Emotionally, I think Tannisha is doing pretty well. She's been in ex- cellent spirits, joking wi theveryone. But I know it's difficult for her to have to watch from the side aid not be able to play." Stevens will undergo more surgery today at Michigan's Kellogg Eye Center to further determine the extent of the damage to her eye. Though any sort of recovery seems bleak, if Stevens has any say in the matter, don't be surprised to see her sack on the court before long.
