Despite losing their Big Ten home opener last Saturday against Ohio State, the Wolverines put forth a strong performance and received their highest score of the year. The team followed its 256 at Minnesota with a 259 at the Windy City Invitational. This weekend Michigan continued its streak, vaulting up to 268.05. The Buckeyes ultimately won the meet with a score of 278.25, which reinforces their position as one of the elite teams in men's gymnastics. "Ohio State is a national powerhouse," Michigan coach Bob Darden said. Although they lost as a team, the Wolverines performed well in several of the individual events. Mike Mott won the pommel horse event with a 9.5 and teammate Chris Onuska came in third at 9.3. Rich Dopp won the horizontal bar event at 9.7, and Bob Young came in second on the still rings, also posting a 9.7. Dopp was pleased that his best performance happened on his last event. "(Winning the horizontal bar was) a great way to end it all," Dopp said. "It was just things I've been working on over the past few years that came together." Raul Molina's third-place finish in the all-around standings was of particular concern to Michigan coach Bob Darden. He predicted before the meet that Molina would do well. "He has been given the oppor- tunity to perform in the all around, and he goes out and gets an outstanding score," Darden said. Team intensity and the first home competition of the season were consensus reasons for the squad's success. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Unfortunately some of the ingre- dients, such as blocking and serving, were left out as were starters Andy Spitser and Gun Unlver. Thus the Wolverines (2-3 overall) were burned with two losses. Junior Justin MacLaurin said, "We have all of the ingredients for a good team. We're just in the baking stages now." Friday at Notre Dame, Michigan lost the first game but came back and cooked the Irish in the next two. In the deciding fifth game the Irish turned up the heat in a 15-10 victory for the match. Saturday night an undefeated Michigan State team won 15-9 in game one. The Spartans' several service errors and a 6-0 Michigan run gave the Wolverines a 15-8 vic- tory in game two. Junior Mike Rubin offered insight on the pressures felt during the 13-13 deadlock in all-im- portant game three. "There were a lot of side-outs," he said, "the loser would have to come back and win the next two games so it was a pivotal point in the match." Michigan State won the next two points and used the momentum in game four to win 15-9 for a match victory over the Wolverines. Spartan head coach Sante Perrelli was impressed by Michigan. "I think our guys had to gut it out. (Michigan) took advantage of a lot of our weaknesses tonight," he said. "You never predict what hap- pens between Michigan and Michigan State, that's the glory of the rivalry." TRACK Continued from page 2 the top two spots in their event. Michigan's Trinity Townsend (49.52) provided fervor for the fans with a second-place photo-finish in the 400 meters. The last and most competitive race of this unscored meet, the mile relay, met with some controversy, as the third-leg runners entered the first curve of the track. At that point, Eastern Michigan was leading, Michigan was running on EMU's shoulder and Michigan State was contesting for position. As Michigan's runner tried to pass on the curve, followed closely by MSU, EMU's entry lost control, flailing his arms to keep his balance around the tight corner. (Questions were raised if the runner did this on purpose to keep from being passed.) As the Wolverine and Spartan runners sprinted on the outside, the EMU runner lost his baton and was out of the race. In the anchor leg of the same race, Michigan was leading, when an MSU runner came from behind to take the lead, but pulled up twenty yards later due to injury. Michigan went on to win the race. nEven though the competition was substantial at the Michigan Relays, the first real test is next week at Ohio State, which boasts many Olympic Trial-caliber athletes, including Chris Sanders, the nation's 10th-ranked long jumper. It will be the team's first scored meet of the season. 5TH AVE.
