YEAR: Senior ELIGIBILITY: Senior WHY: Ouimet totaled five points in the Wolverines 7-1 victory over Notre Dame Saturday. He scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season to go along with his three assists. BACKGROUND: One of the fastest skaters in college hockey and a key player on both special team units. Ouimet leads the team with 34 points. Last season, Ouimet amassed 29 points while scoring three game-winning goals. Ouimet was a fifth-round draft pick by the Washington Capitals in the 1990 NHL Draft. Women capture Simmons title Ouimet by Dave Darby The rumbling you heard Friday evening was the Michigan women's track team steamrolling its competi- tion in the 12th annual Red Simmons Invitational. Michigan played the unreceptive host, dominating the distance events and placing in every event they entered. The shot put competition was re- duced to a two-woman battle be- tween Wolverines Ronda Meyers and Julie Victor. Victor set the pace with a throw of 44-1 1/4", but Meyers bested her with a 44-6 3/4 heave on her final attempt to win. While Meyers expects she and Victor to be first and second in most of the meets this season, she was disappointed in the competition. "I expected a lot more during this meet," she said. "There were two or three other girls here who could throw 44 or 45." Freshmen Monika Black and Linda Stuck dueled in the high jump. Black won the event with 5-7 3/4. In other field events, Bryn Gerich took second in the triple jump with a 34-5 1/2. On the track, Michigan's distance team was in a class by itself. With six entrants in the 3000 meters, the team swept the first six places, with Chris Szabo winning in 9 minutes, 57.3 seconds. Molly Lori and Katy Hollbacher were second and third, respectively. Karyn Harvey won the 600 me- ters in 1:34.55, edging out her teammate Jessica Kluge by half a second. Running unattached, Michigan's Kristine Westerby won the 800 easily in 2:13.47. The most exciting race of the meet was the mile. Szabo set a fast pace but dropped out after three laps. That left the race to Michigan's Molly McClimon and Mindy Schmidt, running for adidas. On the backstretch of the final lap, McClimon managed to pass Schmidt, whom she had trailed most of the way, to win in 4:47.39. McClimon said of her win, "We wanted to run a fast race and we had it all worked out." While Michigan's sprinters Tearza Johnson and Richelle Webb failed to win their events, they com- piled several second- and third-place finishes. Webb was second in the 400 meters in 58.69, third in the 55- meter dash in 7.36, and second in the 200 in 25.71. Johnson was second in the 55 in 7.30, and third in the 200 in 25.80. Michigan's versatile Laura Jerman won her first individual col- legiate event in the 55-meter hurdles, winning in 8.37 seconds. Lisa Adams took third in 8.83. Jerman also anchored an exciting 4x400 me- ter relay, passing her Central Michigan foe on the backstretch of the final lap. "I knew I had to pass her there because there wasn't enough room on the curve to pass and maintain it," Jerman said. Jerman and relay mates Adams, McClimon, and Debbie Manns won the event in 4:02.68. The combination of Tanya Clay, Jen Struht, Kluge, and Harvey ran away with the 4x800-meter relay, winning in 9:26.59. Former Michigan Coach "Red" Simmons was on hand to award the Athletes of the Meet. MU --LLY OI Vt.P A Michigan high jumper competes in the Red Simmons Invitational. Trivia Answer The New England Patriots parlayed an AFC Wild Card berth into a Super Bowl bid at the end of the 1985 season. The Patriots met the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX in New Orleans, suffering a then-Super Bowl- record 36-point defeat. New England this week hired former New York Giants coach Bill Parcells as head coach. Relays close with Wheatley victory by Tonya Broad Daily Sports Writer If you left the men's track & field meet at the Track & Tennis Building early on Saturday to go to the men's basketball game, then you missed the best part of the Michigan Relays. The debut of football players IN LESS BORE AIR THE SHOE, BETWEENYOU AND Felman Malveaux and Tyrone Wheatley, coupled with the return of injured pole vaulter Toby VanPelt, set up an emotional atmosphere for the nighttime finals. Returning from a hamstring injury, VanPelt won the pole vault with a jump of 17 3/4. Malveaux went into the 55-meter finals with the fastest preliminary time, but Wheatley stole the event in a blistering 6.30 seconds, two- hundredths of a second off a provisional qualifying time for NCAAs. Malveaux finished third (6.40) and felt good coming into the final considering he had barely a week's practice under his belt. "I had the best time (coming in)," he said. "But the start was quick and caught me off guard." Other standouts for the meet included Michigan's shotputters Chris Lancaster and Jery Hannifin, who placed first and second, respectively, in the meet. The Wolverines' pentathletes, Shawn Clancy and Brian Smith, also took See TRACK, Page 8 Hi/Lo " Funk " Cardio Pump " Fatbumer " Interval Training Butts Gutts and Biceps *0 Cu o C,, CD 4 0 0 C.
