A A C Even though he has pleaded guilty to a charge of using explo- sives in South Quadrangle Residence Hall and faces a four-year jail sen- tence, a University athlete is being allowed to continue living in University housing. Damon Jones, a redshirt fresh- man tight end on the football team, set off a bomb in front of his resident director's door on the third floor of Fred Taylor house on the morning of Dec. 5. Jones made the bomb out of a large plastic soda bottle lined with aluminum foil and filled it with a bathroom cleaning substance. No one was injured in the blast, which sent shards of plastic flying 25 feet away. Jones was suspended from the football team by head coach Gary Moeller immediately following the incident. Jones did not travel with the team to the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Bruce Madej, the University's sports information director, said he is not aware of the Athletic Department's plans for Jones. "Keep in mind we're months away from playing, months away from practicing," Madej said. Jones was originally charged with three felony counts: the act of placing an explosive with intent to harm, possession of a Molotov Cocktail or other explosive, and possession of a dangerous weapon. In exchange for having the other charges dismissed, Jones pleaded guilty on Jan. 12 to one count of us- ing an explosive weapon with intent to alarm. The charge has a maximum sen- tence of four years in jail and a $2,000 fine. Despite the guilty plea, Jones will be allowed to remain in University housing, but will be moved to another dormitory. The University Housing Division issued a prepared statement on the case, which said, "Damon Jones has been re-assigned on a probationary basis to another residence hall other than South Quad as a result of disci- plinary action taken by the Housing Division. The Housing Division is not able to comment further on the disciplinary status of individual residents." Jeff Long, assistant athletic direc- tor for football, denied rumors that the football team put pressure on the Housing Division to keep Jones in University housing. Alan Levy, public relations direc- tor for the Housing Division, said he could not confirm or deny the rumor. Jones has asked to be allowed to serve his sentence under the Holmes Youthful Training Act, which means that he would serve the sentence handed down by the court, but then the incident would be expunged from his record if he is not arrested again. Jones will be sentenced in Washtenaw County 15th District Court on March 12. WASHINGTON (AP) - A doc- ument in the hands of Iran-Contra prosecutors indicates George Bush asked President Jose Azcona Joyo of Honduras in 1986 to help him se- cretly move guns to the Nicaraguan Contras, and assured him, "it can be done with deniability." It has been known that then-Pres- ident Reagan made his vice presi- dent an emissary to Honduras in 1985 and 1986. . But what hasn't been known is that Bush's mission in 1986 was specifically to get Azcona to "assure a supplied front" that allowed mili- tary equipment and other material to reach the U.S.-backed Contras in their battle with the leftist Nicaraguan government. A memo given to Bush by the Reagan administration shows that Bush, who has publicly maintained he was "out of the loop" for all of the Iran-Contra scandal, was deeply involved in the Reagan administra- tion's effort to find secret ways to help the Contras militarily after Congress banned such help. Iran-Contra prosecutors ques- tioned Bush about the document ex- tensively when they took his sworn deposition on Jan. 11, 1988. But its +& 1 existence was not known publicly until Bush released a transcript of the deposition five days before he left office. At the time of Bush's meeting with Azcona, Congress had banned U.S. military aid to the Nicaraguan rebel. But it was later learned that White House aid Oliver North had been operating a clandestine arms pipeline to the Contras through Honduras - a key element of the Iran-Contra scandal. formuta Sports Nutrition Body Building Products Natural Body Care Products Vitamins & - - Minerals 1677 Plymouth Rd. 665-7688 Located in the Courtyard Shops North CampusPlaza I.
