ASPEN EXTREME You might have noticed that all the studios release their
Oscar contenders in late December. Then, in early January, they dump all
their dreck on us. Exhibit A. With no stars, just talent. At Briarwood:
10:05, 12:20, 2:40, 5, 7:30, 10, 12:10. At Showcase: 1:45, 4:20, 7:35,
10:05, 12:25.
DAMAGE Then there are the great films of '92 then just haven't hit Ann
Arbor yet. Louis Malle directs Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and the
ubiquitous Miranda Richardson in this tale o' obsession. At Showcase:
12:30, 2:55, 5:20, 7:50, 10:20, 12:30.
HExED Exhibit B, a derivative comedy. Poor Adrienne Shelley ("The
Unbelievable Truth") must really need the money. At Showcase: 12:00,
2:55, 5:00, 7:25, 9:35, 11:35.
KNiGHT MOVES Exhibit C: The Highlander himself, Christopher Lambert,
stars with second-stringers Tom Skerritt and Daniel Baldwin in this thriller
from director Carl Schenkel. We've never heard of him either. At Show-
case: 12:25, 2:50, 5:15, 7:45, 10:10, 12:25.
LoREo's OIL Though this miracle cure movie has the potential to be
another "Awakenings," with "Mad Max" meister George Miller at the
helm, it just might lay off the sentimental crap. The great Nick Nolte tries
an Italian accent; also with Susan Sarandon. At Showcase: 1:10, 4:10, 7:20,
10:10, 12:30.
THE LOVER The latest from director Jean-Jacques Annaud ("Quest for
Fire," "The Bear") is an adaptation of a Marguerite Duras novel. This is
one of those French sex movies you've always heard about. At Ann Arbor
1 & 2: 12:30, 2:35, 4:45, 7:05, 9:20
USED PEOPLE Don't let the good cast fool you. The director of "Antonia
and Jane" wastes a decent cast that includes Marcia Gay Harden in this
"Fried Green Magnolias." Poor Marcello Mastroianni must really need the
money. At Showcase: 1:20, 3:55, 7:15, 9:50, 12:10.

FILMS HOLDING:
ALADDIN It's probably the best movie of the Christmas season - it's an
animated feature, not a cartoon, damnit! Robin Williams will never find a
better role (at least it's not in "Toys.") At Briarwood: 10:05, 12, 2:10, 4:15,
7 9, 11:15. At Showcase: 12:35, 2:40, 4:45, 7, 9, 11.
AuvE Disney goes cannibal in this inspiring tale about some schmucks
who have to eat each other to survive - all handled quite tastefully, we
hear. We hope Ethan Hawke's the one who gets eaten. At Showcase: 1:35,
4:20, 7:25, 10:05, 12:25.
THE BODYGUARD The public has decided to chuck the critics and make
this one of the biggest hits of the holiday season. Trust us, it's really is
awful. At Briarwood: 7:15, 9:45, 12:05. At Showcase: 3:45, 9:35, 12:05.
BODY OF EVIDENCE Madonna stars as Sharon Stone, with Willem Dafoe
as Michael Douglas in this almost-NC-17 pseudo-smoker. So bad it's
almost good ... no, it's still bad. At Briarwood: 10:15, 12:15, 2:15, 4:45,
7:25, 9:30, 11:30. At Showcase: 1:10, 3:20, 5:30, 7:40, 9:55, 11:55.
CHAPLIN Robert Downey Jr. of the criminally long eyelashes actually
gives a good, hell, call it great performance as the Tramp; too bad director
Dick Attenborough ("Cry Freedom") couldn't make a decent picture to
save his life. At Showcase: 12:00.
A FEw GOOD MEN Rob Reiner's latest lowest common denominator
blockbuster manages a Few Good Scenes with Jack, but little more. But,
boy, oh boy, that Tom Cruise really is irresistible. At Briarwood: 10, 12:45,
3:45, 7, 9:40, 12:05. At Showcase: 12:50, 3:50, 7:05, 10:00, 12:35.
FOREVER YOUNG This remake of "Always" stars Mel Gibson and his butt.
People who like this sort of shit will find this the sort of shit they like. At

HomA Lousy director Danny DeVito teams up with lousy screenwriter
David Mamet for a, well, fucking abominable biopic. If we see one more

HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEw YORK Even folks who were suckers for
Macaulay in the first one can't stand the remake, er, sequel. At Briarwood:

HOWARDS END Somebody told us that this flick ain't so bad. At State: 2,
4:30, 9:15, 11:45.
THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS Daniel Day-Lewis as the next action hero?
Well, he's better looking than Arnie. At State: 7 p.m. only.
NOwHERE TO RUN We do not like him, Sam I Am. We do not like Jean-

A RIVER RUmS THROUGH IT Bob Redford's sleep-a-thon is about as

SCENT OF A WOMAN Hoo-hah? Al Pacino gives a performance that can
only be called a tour-de-force; too bad the movie's not really about him.
Chris O'Donnell stars as a boarding school kid who gains redemption not
ratting on a bunch of upper-class prigs who hate his guts anyway. Smells
