The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 11, 1992 -Page 21 IRISH Continued from page 1 one game under their belts. The only time the Wolverines have beaten Notre Dame in the last five meetings was last year, when the Wolverines warmed up at Boston College. "I think anytime you're around. football you hear coaches say a lot - and there's good reasons for it - that you make the biggest im- provement from game one to game two, because you get a lot of the kinks ironed out, the calmness, the coolness, the first game mistakes," Moeller said. "I don't want to dwell on (not having played a game yet) because I can't dwell on it with our team. You're cards are dealt to you, and you.gotta play them. "But I would rather be in the po- sition where I've played a game than I haven't, and I think most coaches around the country would share that opinion." Although the coaching staff has had the opportunity to scout the Irish, Moeller warns not to place too much emphasis on what Notre Dame showed last week. "I didn't have to scout them to know what kind of back (Jerome) Bettis was; all I had to do was watch last year's film and know him personally. I didn't have to scout them to see what Rick Mirer was, I know about (Lake) Dawson, Lindsay Knapp, a lot of those peo- ple. * "Really the offense Northwestern runs is not the one we're gonna be running, so what we scouted them there is probably, not gonna be at all what we're gonna get in the football game. So sometimes you can be misled in those scouting reports. There's some advantage, but not enough to offset the experience your players get (by playing a game). What Moeller knows is the Irish have two of the most dynamic of- fensive performers in the nation. Quarterback Mirer, a lifelong Wolverine fan who chose Notre Dame because he was ignored on his visit to Ann Arbor, is an odds- on favorite to become the eighth Irish Heisman Trophy winner. Mirer threw for 170 yards and two scores last week, but his talents were not in great demand because of the successful ground game. Fullback Bettis, who reportedly also was close to being a Wolverine, is Notre Dame's pri- mary weapon. The junior, also a top Heisman candidate, burst onto the scene last season when he rushed for 972 yards and 16 touchdowns, 'Their offensive line dominated us last year, and we know they're going to move the football against us with the number of weapons they have., - Lou Holtz ND football coach bowling his way through many of the nation's top defenses. He picked up Saturday right where he left off, carrying 19 times for 130 yards. "I don't think it's very hard to pick him out where he's lined up (at fullback or tailback)," Moeller said. "You can see him, you can know where he's at, and you can some- times know he's gonna get the football, but it's still very difficult to stop him , "I know they'll mix some things in for us that they didn't play against Northwestern - we always expect that - but he's an outstand- ing football player, he's just a hard guy to tackle, and that's where you gotta get numbers to the ball and make sure you wrap him up. I don't know that we're gonna see a better back." When Bettis is not bouncing off of defenders, tailback Reggie Brooks probably will be. Brooks, who was a starting cornerback two years ago, nearly matched his ca- reer total with 157 yards in the opener. However, the big story in South Bend has been the suspension of linebacker Demetrius DuBose, an all-American candidate. DuBose accepted money from a Notre Dame alumnus in his hometown of Seattle, saying the alumnus had been a family friend for a number of years. The NCAA didn't quite buy that story, though, and DuBose was declared ineligible for the first two games of the season. "Anytime you take one of your star players, a captain, out of the team, it's obviously gonna hurt you," Moeller said. "DuBose has been a very, very active football player for them. Anyone would be better with him in there than with- out. They lose a lot of experience there, but they still have good foot- ball players. It probably hurts them a little, but I don't think to any large degree that it softens them." Irish coach Lou Holtz disagrees. Holtz is maintaining his weekly po- sition that his team is not as good as everyone thinks, and that it will have an awfully tough time beating anybody. "This is going to be an awfully big challenge for us," he said. "Last year (a 24-14 Michigan victory) they shut us off offensively. Their offensive line dominated us last year, and we know they're going to move the football against us with the number of weapons they have. (Elvis) Grbac has played great against us for three years, and (Ricky) Powers is as tough a back as you'll find anywhere. (Chris) Hutchinson is probably the best lineman in the Big Ten. "They won it up front against us last year, they've won four straight Big Ten titles and we know we're going to have to improve tremen- dously this week to compete against them." I' ..............
