Carolina iebreaker: Total Points Michigan vs. Washington: Name: Phone: by Jaeson Rosenfeld Daily Basketball Writer The Michigan women's basket- ball team has a pre-practice ritual that coach Trish Roberts would just as soon do without. At 12 p.m. the players file into the locker room at Crisler Arena, to dress themselves for the coming practice. Five minutes later the "great mi- gration" begins, as the Wolverines make their way to the training room to have their injuries treated. After hobbling through the first two games of the season, Michigan is finally making the path to the training room a road less traveled. The return of two players from in- juries will allow Michigan to dress a season-high ten players for tomor- row's contest against Notre Dame (1-2) at the Joyce Athletic and Con- vocation Center. Roberts is hoping the return of - Trish Roberts, women's basketball coach Michigan Shimmy Gray and the debut of Jen- nifer Brzezinski will help the Wolverines capture their first vic- tory. "We've got two players back," Roberts said. "Jennifer Brzezinski, our freshman, has looked very good in practice the last two days. This will give us a little more depth on the inside and a little more depth on the outside, as Shimmy can play both inside and outside." The return of Brzezinski and Gray could also help jump-start Michigan's fastbreak, which has performed poorly in its two previous ' games. Michigan's fastbreak should be given plenty of chances to prove its mettle against Notre Dame, as Irish guards Coquese Washington, Sherri Orlosky, and Stacy Fields have had trouble handling the ball early in the sesason. "We had 41 turnovers against Purdue, so we have been turning over the ball at quite a rapid rate," said Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw. Knowing that the Irish have had problems controlling the ball, and having two more sets of fresh legs to substitute with, Roberts will look to turn up the pressure. "We did tighten up our defense in the last 8 to 9 minutes of the (Indiana State) game, with a full- court press, trapping, running and jumping type of thing," Roberts said. "You're going to see a little bit more of that now that we have some peo- ple we can sub in." When the Irish guards have been able to hang onto the ball, they have been able to score. Orlosky led the team in scoring in its first two games, while Washington has also scored in double figures. After being burned from long range by Indiana State, Michigan has worked on de- fending the perimeter in practice. While Notre Dame's guards have scored points on the outside, the key to their offense is the frontcourt. The frontcourt was shut down in the Irish's first two losses, but got on track in a 76-71 victory over Illinois- Chicago. Sophomore forward Letitia Bowen was a force inside with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the Notre Dame triumph. tire g room decrease "They've got two kids who postj: up very well inside," saidsRoberts of Bowen and teammate Katura Jones. n "My understanding is the post play- ers work really well together." One particular area where theT Notre Dame frontcourt has excelled : is on the boards, with the Irish outre- bounding their opponents in all three games this season. Notre Dame's supremacy on the glass will be put to the test by a revi-r talized Michigan frontcourt. The ad- AA ERIK ANGERMEIER-Datly Sophomore forward Carrie Stewart shoots over a Toledo defender. And, because Notre Dame scouted a depleted Michigan team at Indiana State, Roberts hopes to surprise the Irish.P "They're coming off a win, so that's going to give them a little more momentum," Roberts said. "Hopefully we can catch them off- guard, thinking that we're going to play the way they saw us play at In- diana State." After tomorrow's Notre Dame; contest, Michigan will travel to Pitts- 0 burgh and the Miami Holiday Clas- sic Tournament, as well as hosting Butler and Detroit Mercy.
