:j, c Page 14-The Michigan Daily- Friday, December 11, 1992 HOCKEY Blue fights Kent schizophrenia by Tim Rardin Daily Hockey Writer The question of the day for the Michi- gan hockey team is which Kent State team will show up this weekend? Will it be the Golden Flash squad that fell to Division III Mercyhurst, 4-3, at home two weeks ago, or the one that took Lake Superior State to the wire last week- end in Sault Ste. Marie, tying the Lakers 5- 5 Friday and losing 4-3 Saturday? "We've had some big wins, and some tough losses," Kent State coach Bill Switaj said. "That's the sign of an inexperienced team. At this level, we have to learn to play with more consistency." Sounds familiar. Regardless of which team takes the ice for Kent, the Wolverines can expect a competitive series. Though the Golden Flashes are only 5-8-1 in the Central Colle- giate Hockey Association, eight of their 12 CCHA games have been decided by one goal or less, and 10 of their 14 games overall have been tied or within one goal either way entering the last minute of regu- lation. "I expect a close game, and I expect them to come in and really work hard," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "We're going to be checked closely, and they've got a goalie (Scott Shaw, .884 save percentage) who helps them stay in the games. If we're not at our best, they're go- ing to be in the game, they're going to be right there." At their best, the Wolverines are the deeper team of the two. However, Michi- gan will be two players short on the defen- sive side Friday. Captain David Harlock is in Finland to play in the Izvestia Tourna- ment Dec. 12-21, and Aaron Ward is serv- ing a one-game suspension for fighting at the end of last Saturday's game with Michigan State. "It'll be a measurement of our depth," Berenson said of the absence of Harlock and Ward. "Can Al Sinclair come in and do the yob, and can Steven Halko get the job done playing with Mark Sakala instead of David Harlock? I think we've still got six defensemen that can do the job." With or without Harlock and Ward, Switaj knows his team will have a big step to climb against Michigan, particularly in the unfriendly confines at Yost. "Michigan's a great team. They're very explosive and they scare anybody, I think," Switaj said. "We're going to have to play a full 60 minutes, and we're gonna have to play perfect hockey if we're going to have any chance." After a break the following weekend, Michigan will embark to Joe Louis Arena Dec. 26-27, seeking its fifth straight Great Lakes Invitational title. Michigan State, Michigan Tech, and Northern Michigan will join the Wolverines in Detroit, with Michigan scheduled to play Michigan Tech in its first game. Berenson acknowledges the benefits of the GLI not only to this particular Michigan team, but to the entire Wolverine program. "It's given Michigan the credibility in terms of the hockey program in a big league setting. It's been good for our re- cruiting. It's just another positive thing for Michigan that maybe wasn't there six or seven years ago," Berenson said. "The GLI has been a positive thing for our team. When we've done well at the GLI, it's given our team some added confi- dence." The Wolverines complete their winter break schedule Jan. 2-3 at Yost in a non- conference matchup with the University of Alberta. Sounds good, but there's a catch. All you have to do is put in two hard swim practices a day. Just swim seven or eight miles a day or maybe a little more. Say, nine. Not so appealing anymore? Well, this is what Michigan's women's swim- ming team will be doing during its winter break. The destination for the Wolveri- nes' annual winter training trip is the island of Oahu. The team will also compete in the Rainbow Invitational, Jan. 2-3, with Hawaii, Villanova, Indiana State and Washington State. Following a successful end to the first half of the season with a ti- tle at the Speedo Collegiate Cup, the And junior Kathy scribed the goals of camp this way: "Getting back into ing." Deibler de- the training heavy train- Wolverines will be gearing up for their Big Ten competition. Coach Jigs Richardson called the trip, "A training camp ... with enough competition to keep us hon- est." Practices, she said, will be "really intense, the hardest all year." In addition to the Rainbow Invi- tational, the team will be swimming dual meets against Hawaii, Vil- lanova and Illinois State. "Villanova will be our toughest competition," Richardson said, "But we should be the strongest women's team. "This is a very, very good train- ing experience - a good environ- ment." The trip will not be all work, of course. Deibler said she and the rest of the swimmers will spend a lot of time laying on the beach, and having fun. Richardson also assured that Michigan would "do the whole thing" - seeing the sights, hitting the beach. Richardson is very pleased with the team's progress. With three swimmers already achieving NCAA automatic qualifying times, and four others meeting NCAA consideration qualifying times, the Wolverines are faster than previous years at this point in the season. The NCAA automatic qualifiers are Deibler in the 500-yard freestyle, Alecia Humphrey in the 100 and 200 backstroke and Lara Hooiveld in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Those at- taining consideration times are Deibler Mindy Gehrs, Beth Jackson, Jennifer Almeida and Kirsten Silverster.
