Page 4 -The Michigan Daily - Rose Bowl Preview - December 10, 1992 DURST Continued from page 1 don a cap and gown and wait in line for the last time at Michigan, and it would be nice to cap off the three- and-a-half years with something I have yet to experience in college. I'm sure there are some other guys, namely the Wolverine seniors, who feel the same way. Yet when it comes to the Rose Bowl, the cliche really doesn't hold -winning isn't everything. It's defi- nitely a sought-after bonus, buta great percentage of the accomplishment is getting there and participating in it all; you have to get there in order to win. The Rose Bowl always means something. It just seems that the fact you're there means something. Maybe it's just me. Maybe be- cause I'm a Michigander and have been brainwashed by alumni parents and a childhood filled with Saturdays ' of Ufer ranting excitedly about the greatest team in the world on its way to the greatest bowl. But there are others who haven't shared those experiences that still feel the same way - that making it to the Rose Bowl is a legitimate goal. It's the seniors who helped capture five straight Big Ten titles. That's what they did to get to this Rose Bowl, and now their accom- plishment is not supposed to mean anything because the national cham- pionship isn't on the line. Maybe people have gotten a bit jaded. If nothing else it's the only bowl left without some idiotic sponsor name attached to it. That has to mean some- thing, if corporate America won't mess with it to try to make a buck. And one the stupid bowl coalition won't touch. It knows enough not to trivialize tradition Others don't afpear to know that much. It seems thai the gourmet meal doesn't satisfy anmore; all people want is the whol smorgasbord or nothing. If you're one of these people, just keep in mind - you could be one of the ones out there starving. In 1981, Michigan defeated Washington in the Rose Bowl, 23-6 .F Bring your picks to the Student Publications building at 420 Maynard by Dec. 17 for your chance to win a $15 dollar gift certificate to O'Sullivan's Eatery & Pub.
