Do clothes make the team?
New duds not enough for 'M'

You just never know what to make of this team, do you? A walking,
talking, 28-legged, 14-brained psychologist's dream, these Wolverines are.
And last night's installment was just another chapter in the growing saga of
the Michigan basketball team.
Where to start? I guess you could check in with a fashion report. They
brought back the yellow uniforms, the ones in which they lost to Duke and
Purdue last year. So now it's 1-1 in blue, 1-0 in white and 1-0 in yellow.
Paisley, anyone? Or maybe a combination blue tops and yellow knickers for
that bumblebee effect?
Next we have the socks. In a bizarre version of, Othello, slowly the Fab
Five has converted the team to wearing black socks. The only holdouts now
are Eric Riley, Michael Talley, Jason Bossard and Leon Derricks.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention Michigan's own Beau Brummel,
Jalen Rose. The point guard/fashion plate debuted the shorts-halfway-down-
rear look. Thank heavens for biking shorts.
But the pressing issue for today, as it was Monday against Detroit
Mercy, was the on-again, off-again play of Steve Fisher's Wolverines.
"Emotion and constant effort are critical," Fisher said. "Bowling Green
had it for longer stretches than we did. Maybe we thought they were going
to quit when it was 10-2 (Michigan), but they didn't."
They didn't quit then, and in fact didn't quit ever. The Falcons led
briefly early in the second half, and only until the buzzer did they relent. If
only the same could be said for Michigan.
"The effort was mediocre," Jimmy King critiqued. "At times we had
stretches where we did good things and at times it seemed like they could do
whatever they wanted to do."
In case you've forgotten, the team that did whatever they wanted to was
not the Chicago Bulls, not Duke. Not even Purdue, whom the Wolverines
play in a matter of weeks. It was Bowling Green.
Bowling Green is picked to finish fourth in the MAC. The Mid-
American Conference, to be sure, is certainly a fine conference, but it is the
Mid-American Conference. It is one of those conferences that gets only one
bid to the NCAA, a conference full of schools you need an address and a
pulse to get into.
Realize, please, that it is not very easy to play. down to the Falcons'
level. But, by hook or crook, the Wolverines managed to do so for the better
part of the game. Coach, any ideas?
"I want to make sure that our kids know that if they want to be good, you
have to stay with it and maintain concentration and say, 'Boy, I just stunk
tonight,' and look at film and go about trying to get better," Fisher said.
Roll the films, Charlie. Well, we see Michigan shooting 51 percent from
the floor, a season-high 73 percent from the line and generally playing ac-
ceptable basketball. OK, roll the films again. Fifteen assists, eight blocks
and five steals. All right, one last time. We'll find something yet. The

The Michigan Wolverines. In the
season premiere of the yellow uni-
forms, Michigan beat Bowling
Green, 79-68, last night at Crisler
Arena.
The victory was never really in
doubt after Michigan jumped out to
a 10-2 lead to start the game.
However, the Falcons refused to quit
and actually led 2:16 into the second
half before Michigan put a stop to
the insurrection with an 8-0 run.
From that point on, the teams traded
baskets for the most part, with
Bowling Green never getting closer
than six.
"I think after we were up, 10-2,
we got kind of hungry to blow them
out," Michigan forward James
Voskuil said. "That's when our de-
fense kind of broke down and they
were able to stay in the game."
Bowling Green forward Ray
Lynch benefited from the loose de-
fense outside. Hitting four of five
from three-point range, he led the
Falcons with a career-high 20 points.
Not especially pleased with his
team's up-and-down play, Michigan
coach Steve Fisher said, "We won
because we have better players.
They played harder for 40 minutes

Chris Webber plays tight defense against Bowling Green's Shane Kline-
Ruminski last night at Crisler Arena. Michigan beat the Falcons, 79-68.
Wolverines outrebound Bowling Green, 38-27, hold the Falcons to 43 per-
cent shooting from the floor and commit only 14 fouls.
So where's the problem? Well, I guess the answer is something you can't
find in the box score or the film. The problem is between the collective ears
vi Fisher's club (imagine that for a second). It's exactly what Fisher said
about wanting to be good, wanting to be the best.
To draw an analogy I think most of us can relate to, think back to a time
when you studied really hard for your first midterm and aced it. Then you
thought, "This class is cake. No need to study anymore." So you put away
the books for awhile and flicked on "The Simpsons."
Soon enough, the second midterm comes along, and you get your butt
whumped and then you realize, perhaps too late, that what made the first test
so easy is that you worked for it.
Right about now, I think the Wolverines are taking their second midterm.
Let's hope they pass.
