Spencer takes over as head
of U-M admissions office

the director's office wall which

terin director of undergraduate ad-
missions to replace Richard Shaw,
the former director.
Ihaw, who came to the university
in August 1988 from the University
ofC Alifornia, Berkeley, stepped
down from the position September 1
to become dean of admissions and
<anc ial aid at Yale University.
"IHe left because it was a great
opportunity," Spencer said. "He had
to make a choice between two great
schools and it was a difficult
choice."

Yale, we understand the unusual op-
portunity this presents - and the
prestige in being the first admissions
director that any of the major private
colleges has hired from a public uni-
versity."
Spencer has served as the interim
director since June and will continue
in that post until a permanent direc-
tor is chosen - a process which
could take between three months to
a year.
The nationwide search has not
yet begun, but Spencer said he plans
to apply for the position.
"I will apply," Spencer said. "I'd
like to be considered for the position
because I love Michigan and love
what I'm doing and I'd love to be
director but I understand the
university has a need to interview
other people who may also be
interested in the position."
While serving as interim director
Spencer said he would like to im-
prove the quality and efficiency of
the application procedure while per-
sonalizing the process by which

18,000 students will apply to U-M
this year.
Spencer said he would like to
continue to run the admissions office
under the style established by Shaw
which includes programs to increase
diversity at the University.
Shaw also helped develop a bet-
ter relationship between the Office
of Undergraduate Admissions and
the Financial Aid Office and
Spencer said he would like to con-
tinue this while working to build a
closer relationship with other col-
leges and schools at Michigan.
"My agenda is to bring strong
students, both minority and majority,
who can be successful and leave
here feeling they want to go out and
tell other students about their expe-
riences here."
Spencer came to the U-M in
1989 after serving as the associate
chief of the Academy's minority
recruiting program from 1976-1982
and as director of admissions at the
U.S. Air Force Academy in
Colorado.
