The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, December 8, 1992- Page 7 Editor tells of reporting in war-torn Sarajevo House Republicans elect by Rachel Katz Kemal Kurspahic is the editor in chief of the only newspaper left in the smoldering chaos of Sarajevo, Bosnia. Oslobodenje could be called an underground paper because it is pub- lished in a basement below the ashes of the old newspaper building. Kurspahic, in speaking yesterday on "Journalism in War-Torn Sarajevo," called the paper, which appears daily in the city, "the last remaining touch of pre-war normality. "We felt it a professional duty to our readers, our fellow citizens and the liberation struggle of the country that was exposed to aggression," Kurspahic said. It has not been an easy year for Oslobodenje, Kurspahic said. Newsprint is almost non-existent in Sarajevo, truck drivers refuse to make deliveries, and journalists are in constant danger. The staff makes its own deliveries and works seven- 'We felt it a professional duty to our readers, our fellow citizens and the liberation struggle of the country that was exposed to aggression.' - Kemal Kurspahic Editor in chief of Oslobodenje day shifts to decrease the danger of coming and going. In a sea of ethnic conflict, the newspaper has retained its multi- ethnic composition. Kurspahic said he is proud of the paper's staff and its loyalty despite the violence di- rected at and around the paper. "The main object of war is divi- sion," Kurspahic said, adding that the Serbs' attacks often disrupt or- ganizations in which different ethnic groups continue to work together. Kurspahic also addressed the broader situation in Bosnia. The violence hurts the Serbs in the city as well as the Muslims, he explained. "When you shoot at the city, you don't discriminate. You shoot Serbs. We live together," he added. When asked what would help stop the fighting, Kurspahic stressed the need for limited airstrikes against selected military sites, a lifting of the arms embargo against Bosnia, con- tinued economic pressure against the former Yugoslav government, stepped-up negotiations and a war crimes trial. Kurspahic's talk was greeted with mixed feelings from students with ties to the former Yugoslavia. Dragan Popovic, a Serbian stu- dent studying at the U-M, said the information Americans receive is bi- ased. The Muslim leaders, he claimed, started the trouble by declaring independence to the objec- tions of Serbian residents. As a re- sult, he said, "The Muslims suffer most in this." Damir Juric, a Croat who has lived in the United States for most of his life, expressed frustration with the lack of Western intervention. "It's obvious that if you don't help the people, and you don't let them defend themselves, and the aggres- sors are on the verge of winning, why should (the Serbs) stop?" he asked. Kurspahic echoed Juric's senti- ment in his talk. "The war will last until the last Bosnian leaves," Kurspahic said. "All that would be left would be the history of genocide." conservative WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans put a more combative stamp on their leadership team yesterday, narrowly electing a staunchly conservative economist to replace a moderate as their No. 3 party official. "Compromise is not going to be in the vocabulary" in the session of Congress that begins Jan. 5, com- plained Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.). As both parties convened to party oficial elect their leaders for the coming two years, GOP members elected Texas Rep. Richard Armey over in- cumbent Californian Jerry Lewis to chair the House Republican Conference. Incumbents won easily for the rest of the top posts in both parties: House Speaker Thomas Foley (D- Wash.), Majority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.), and Majority Whip David Bonoir (D-Mich.), were returned without opposition.
