Page 14 -The Michigan Daily- Friday, September 11, 1992 Singles Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Epic Yeah, I know you're all sick of hearing about Seattle. But as long as those flannel-clad bands keep churn- ing out such killer music, you'll have to hear about it for a long time to come. This nearly flawless compi- lation shows that the rainy city is still home to an immense (and di- verse) wealth of excellent bands. From Pearl Jam's long-haired earth guru soul, to Screaming Trees' crunch and munch pop, the "Sin- gles" soundtrack is, well, brilliant. "Singles" rather succinctly doc- uments what has become known as the era of grunge. There's Mud- honey's sloppy, punk-minded trash ("Overblown") in contrast to a sur- prisingly gorgeous, sad-eyed ballad from Soundgarden's Chris Cornell ("Seasons") Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns" is a dra- matic art rock epic that takes side two of "Ritual De Lo Habitual" a step further. The faboo Pearl Jam. kick in two songs here, ("Breath" and "State Of Love And Trust") proving that the life-changing "Ten" was hardly a fluke. The Lovemongers (Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart) picture-perfect rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Battle Of Evermore," along with Jimi Hendrix' "May This Be Love,"(both from Seattle, don't cha know) give the disc a sense of the city's musical history. "Singles" isn't all Seattle; Paul Westerberg drops a couple of cool tunes (most notably the rocking "Waiting For Somebody"), and the Smashing Pumpkins wrap it up per- fectly with their Peter Pan feedback dynamics on "Drown." - Scott Sterling Swing Out Sister Get In Touch With Yourself Fontana One of the few survivors of the late '80s class of British nightclub jazzpop, Swing Out Sister dazzle on their third release. Chock full of funky, seductive, finger poppin' grooves, "Get In Touch With Yourself' is smooth with a capital Ooooo. Easily the slinkiest thing this duo has ever whipped up, "Get In Touch" invokes mid-'70s soul, awash in a dense mix of wah-wah guitars, deep basslines, and lush string stylings worthy of Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. Vocalist Corinne Drewery's deli- cious voice caresses like French silk on standout tracks like the sexy "Don't Say A Word," and the cool ray cabaret croon of "Incomplete Without You." The perfect James Bond sound- track for mysterious night time ad- ventures. Stay cool, look sharp. -Scott Sterling Wailing Souls All Over The World CI lAOS/Columbia For those of you that are all flanneled out, and would rather lis- ten to a blender on high speed full of your Mom's best silverware than endure more rave music, fear not. The Wail-ing Souls have come to the rescue with a disc of sinuous, ear friendly reggae to cure what ails ya. "All Over The World" juxtaposes a grooving, bass-heavy bottom with infectious melodies to create a beat crazy good time. Standout cuts like "You Ain't Leaving" and "Get Real" cruise along on dancehall-tinged rhythms, complete with rapid-fire toasting courtesy of guest rappers Pappa Juggy and U Roy. And to top it off, Brand New Heavies vocalist N' ea Davenport and Shakespeare's number one Sis- ter Marcella Detroit add their lus- cious voices to the festivities. And we really wanted to a pro-choice benefit because we really felt that was one thing that was really slipping away "We contacted all these organiza- tions and no one was set-up to do shows, so we encouraged the Fund for a Feminist Majority to fund us and in return, we'd put on benefit shows to fund them to start a fundraising branch that would just do primarily shows. "We put on our first show with Nirvana last year, then we did a show with Fugazi ... (After getting other rock people in other cities in- volved), we just turned it over to a gal at the Fund and she's been kick- ing ass." Though L7's late summer tour with the Beastie Boys was hardly a Lollapalooza-type "Let's raise the consciousness of those in atten- dance" kind of experience, it did in- troduce the band to a new audience. "We had a lot of fans at those shows ... but there were a lot of people who would say, 'This is my first time seeing you, you guys are really awesome.' But at the same time, there were a lot of kids who were being annoying. But we have the microphones. A simple 'Shut the fuck up' shuts them up." As Finch sums it, "We're not Bon Jovi." Not by a mile.
