SurveyVsays grads face bleak,
but improving, job market

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -
College graduates will find 2.1 per-
cent fewer jobs than last year wait-
ing for them when they step off the
stage with their degrees into the job
market this year, a survey released
today said.
But the author of Michigan State
University's annual survey of em-
ployers, Patrick Scheetz, said the de-
cline is the smallest in four years.
Employers had reported de-
creases in hiring quotas of 10 per-
cent in 1991-92, 9.8 percent for
1990-91 and 13.3 percent in 1989-
90.
"The employers in the survey
also are telling us they see optimism
down the road, six months to a year
away, but at least thus far the eco-
nomic turnaround has not yet
reached the new college graduates,"
he said.
The report for the 1992-93 re-
cruiting year surveyed 504 employ-
ers, including business, industry and
governmental agencies.
Increased automation and com-
puterization, job elimination and

corporate mergers combined to keep
the job market tight, Scheetz said.
Those graduates who are landing
jobs are being offered slightly higher
salaries than a year ago, the survey
said.
The top starting salary is $40,173

At the bottom are $19,776 for
advertising majors and $19,114 for
journalism majors.
The most serious problems facing
recruiters were limited numbers of
minority and female candidates, un-

$35,141 for electrical engineers;
$32,574 for industrial engineers;
$31,572 for computer scientists;
$29,592 for civil engineers; $29,452
for nurses, and $29,367 for physics
majors.

AYODHYA, India (AP) -
Hindu fundamentalists used pickaxes
and crowbars yesterday to raze a
430-year-old mosque they say was
built on the site where a main Hindu
deity was born. The government de-
clared its highest security alert and
braced for a Muslim backlash.
Prime Minister Narasimha Rao
said the destruction of the mosque
had pushed the country into "a grave
crisis."
About 1,000 people were killed
in Hindu-Muslim riots that broke out
in India in 1990 after Hindu extrem-
ists stormed the mosque. That crisis
brought down the government.
Twenty Muslim leaders met
President Dayal Sharma and ex-

pressed "deep anguish and pain." In
a rare statement on religious issues,
the president condemned the
destruction.
"Those who have harmed (the
mosque) have caused injury to the
centuries-old ethos of India," he
said.
More than 300,000 Hindus made
the pilgrimage to Ayodhya where
they destroyed the mosque and built
a colossal temple to Rama.
Before the hour decreed by as-
trologers as auspicious for the work
to begin, dozens of people climbed
onto a platform near the mosque to
dance and chant.
Pilgrims had set up roadblocks to
prevent 30 busloads of federal riot
police from coming in.
