The Wolverines would like to forget the 89-69 stomping they re- ceived at the hands of the Rockets in 1991. The Rockets' full-court pres- sure frustrated Michigan into shoot- ing 36.4 percent from the floor. Toledo led by as many as 34 points before removing its starters. The Rockets successfully em- ployed a zone defense to neutralize Michigan's primary offensive weapon, Trish Andrew. Andrew, who got into early foul trouble, snared a team high 12 rebounds, but collected only 11 points, nearly eight below her season average. This sea- son, first year head coach Trish Roberts hopes to involve more players in the offense. "Trish (Andrew) is definitely a key player, and she brings a lot to our offense," Roberts said. "But our offense is designed to create shots for everyone on the team. And I think right now the kids are so used to looking to her, and if we can get. them looking for the shots for them- selves, I think that will improve the overall continuity of the team." Roberts may integrate more players into the game through Michigan's up tempo pace. With her players scattered at all ends of the court, Roberts hopes the seniors will help ease the team's transition to a running game. "It's good to have that many older kids," Roberts said. "The thing you Itave to remember is, of all these kids, it's like their freshman year be- cause it's a new head coach, a new system, and everything they're learn- ing, they're learning for the first time just like the freshmen. I think the key to our success depends on how well they are able to make the transition." The Wolverines are also recover- ing from a rash of preseason injuries 'It's like their freshman year because it's a new head coach, a new system...' - Trish Roberts which have decimated their front line. Andrew and senior Nikki Beaudry are the only experienced Wolverine frontcourt players with a clean slate of health. Beaudry led the Wolverines with 16 points against Toledo last season, but she will face an interesting predicament tonight. Beaudry's younger sister, Noelle, is a freshman forward for the Rockets and led Flint Powers High School to the Class A State Championship her senior year. The Rockets finished 15-1 in Mid-American Conference play, and captured the league crown and an NCAA tournament bid under fifth- year head coach Bill Fennelly. With the graduation of standout Jane Roman and three other starters, the Rockets will look to preseason all- American selection Dana Drew for point production. The junior guard averaged 15 points a game last year. 0 0 DOUGLAS KANTE Michigan forward Nikki Beaudry has extra incentive to win tonight's opener against Toledo.
