YEAR: Senior ELIGIBILITY: Senior WHY: Cluff took an individual title at the Northern Open in the 126-pound bracket by beating Wisconsin's Rocco Marchionda. BACKGROUND: Has wrestled at both 118 and 126 pounds for Michigan ... was 193-+ in high school ... three-time Michigan Class C state champion ... strung together 128 consecutive high school victories. While Steve Fisher and company may not have done anything to rein- force their No. 1 ranking over Thanksgiving break, several of the Wolverines' fellow Big Ten squads held up the conference's pride in spectacular fashion. In the annual Tipoff Classic, Purduetunveiled college basketball's next superstar, GlennrRobinson. En route to a 73-69 Boilermaker victory over No. 16 Connecticut, Robinson dominated play on both ends of the court, slamming home 30 points to go with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. "He's one of the great players you get once in a lifetime," Purdue coach Gene Keady said. "This kid has a chance to be a tremendous player." Robinson, a Prop 48 academic casualty last year, let his actions back up his coach's praise. While he led the team in scoring, Robinson did not have the benefit of many plays designed specifically for him, using one-on-one clearouts as his main half court weapon. Refusing to be outdone by their' in-state rivals, the No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers stormed through the Preseason NIT. Besting top 10 squads Florida State and Seton Hall in the semifinals and finals, respec- tively, coach Bobby Knight's Hoosiers claimed the annual New York tournament's crown. Paced by preseason all-America Calbert Cheaney's back-to-back per- sonal career scoring highs (30 against the Seminoles and 36 against the Pirates), Indiana hit on all cylin- ders to overcome the loss of forward Pat Graham. Graham, who sustained a season-ending metatarsal fracture last year, suffered a similar foot in- jury during the semifinal game, po- tentially jeopardizing his career. -from staff reports * I Auburn's Pat Dye resigned his post, and Tennessee's Johnny Majors was fired.
