bring in the quality players,
then Coach Bill Frieder im-
pressed the Voskuil family by
stressing the whole Michigan
family.
"When I made my decision to
come here, the two biggest
things that got me here were the
academics and the basketball
team," Voskuil said. "We're
always right up there in the
basketball rankings, and the
academics always rank high.
"Basketball was probably
even bigger than academics
although I don't like to admit it
often. I really wanted to play on
the best basketball team I could.
I think it was easy to make the
choice between here and Michi-
gan State because of academics.
It is not in the same rank."
Because of the relationships
and memories Voskuil has
amassed here, he has known
since the first semester of his
first year that Michigan would
be the right place for him to be.
Certainly, his teammates agree.
'Basketball was prob-
ably even bigger than
academics although I
don't like to admit it
often. I really wanted
to play on the best
basketball team I
could. It was easy to
make the choice
between here and
Michigan State be-
cause of academics.'
-James Voskuil
"I've really gotten to know
James well," Pelinka said. "We
lived together both our freshman
and sophomore years; we've kind
of grown up at this university
together. He's more than a great
basketball player, he's a great
person, a fun person to be
around and a good friend to
have."
The team tour of Europe
formed some of the bonds that
make a program with back-
grounds as rich as Michigan's
really bond. Cruising a beach in
the South of France with Eric
Riley, Jason Bossard, and
Juwan Howard, Voskuil and his
teammates shared a real eye-
opening experience.
Of course, Fisher was an-
other part of the Michigan
family when Voskuil was being
courted in 1988. As an assistant
coach, Fisher first saw him at an

AAU game in Flint. In addition
to the house call to Grand
Rapids by Frieder, Fisher was
specifically assigned to Voskuil.
Fisher made most of the phone
calls and continued the pursuit
required in the recruitment
process.
Because they got to know
each other throughout the
process and then the season, the
progression to Fisher from
Frieder was an easy adjustment
for Voskuil to make.
Eu.
Adjusting to the addition of
the Fab Five, and the resulting
decrease in playing has not been
particularly easy for Voskuil or
the other older players. How-
ever, Voskuil has refused to let
the circumstances bother him.
"In all honesty, I think it can
do nothing but do good. Un-
doubtedly, my playing time has
gone down, but my exposure on
this team and the University of
Michigan has dramatically
increased since the Fab Five
have come.
"What I need do as far as
James Voskuil concerning his
career afterwards is keep a
positive attitude and do what I
did against teams like Cincin-
nati, or Minnesota - when I do
get in the game, do good and
hopefully people will know about
it."
Voskuil has had to compete
for playing time with teammates
before the "Fab Five" ever
showed up. During his entire
redshirt year of 1988-89, he
worked just as hard as everyone
else, but never played. He never
let himself get down. During the
stretch run of the championship
when the playing rotation was
down to about seven players,
Voskuil realized the importance
of giving support to his team-
mates.
His teammates appreciated
his dedicationhand work ethic,
and rather than let it cause any
strife, it only strengthened their
friendships.
"Our battles are left on the
court, when we leave the tunnel
after practice everything is left
behind, so that doesn't really
carry onto court," said Pelinka,
the only remaining Wolverine
who played during the champi-
onship. "As far as our relation-
ship has gone, it started out
strong when we came in to-
gether as freshmen and it's still
very strong, and one that I hope
to carry into my future, into the

working world or playing

Eu.
Naturally, being a fellow
senior, Voskuil's future is
somewhat undecided as well but
he has a few ideas.
"Winning the Big Ten is
going to be a goal for our team
this year. The mindset is if we
can contend for the Big Ten, and
get the ball to bounce our way to
win the Big Ten, we'll be in real
good shape going into the
tournament.
"My plans for basketball next
year are pretty much up in the
air, dictated solely on my season
this year, and by what people
think of how I play," Voskuil
related. k 'h

Voskuil's coach has high
regard for him and strong
confidence in his playing ability.
"He's a fifth-year senior who's
gotten better every year. He's
our best perimeter shooter,"
Fisher said. "When he has time
to spot up I would have as much
confidence in him as anybody in
the country to make that sta-
tionary jump shot. His ability to
shoot the basketball is his
strength, and he is very ath-
letic."
Of course, being athletic and
having a strong shot is a com-
mon description for hundreds of
college basketball players in the
country. Certainly the NBA
cannot absorb all of them.
Another benefit of the Euro-
pean trip is the exposure he
received there. European clubs
