The atmoshpere is especially important for the Nursing Center, where a diligent and dedicated staff helps the residents recover through the use of various forms of therapy. Although physical therapy often comes to mind, therapies including occupational, speech, music, and activities such as aerobics and bingo are also crucial in the patients recovery and maintenance. Mrs. Mildred 1-lanke goes to physical therapy three times per week. With the help of her Physical Therapist Carol Hossler, Mrs. Hanke is trying to regain the strength to walk. Smiles and words of praise are particularly encouraging for patients. Nancy Kaplan, also a physical therapist, shows her elation over her patient's success. Speech Pathologist Charlene Zand helps Mrs. Gray pronounce words displayed on the flash cards. While Mrs. Gray is highly cognizant, she has difficulty forming the words needed to communicate after suffering from a stroke one year ago. Occupational Therapist Cookie Atkins, uses various techniques to aid her patients regain fine motor skills so they have the ability to return to work or perform the daily functions of living. Aside from the three traditional methods of therapy, activities are also an important part of both physical and emotional recovery. Betty Anne Gilliland teaches aerobics to patients, as a part of the weekly activities. Bingo is also a weekly activity which the patients enjoy. Retirement Center volunteer, Mr. Lauer helps Nursing Center patient, Mr. Clark fill his three bingo cards. Although frustrating and a struggle at times, therapy is rewarding for both the patient and the therapist. . .. 1 >i ,+ alb ' 3 " . y s s h s S y{ 7M1 y'. ti 4 3 "3z s NLf .' . :i : ? a ?: 'i 'era Z $': 4), z , x:: ,.. .r : i . ate ,. ,, { ,' . ;; .v .;t! ,,., ' +ik a. 3 S d W J ".y f 3 f LY ; r 'i iro1 Z Y i( .. .
